Listening

1. Пред'явлення тексту для аудіювання.

Т: Now you will listen to the text "Secrets of a long and healthy life". While lisfening write down the three things Mr. Weibold has always done and the three things he has never done.

secrets of a long and healthy life.

Yesterday afternoon in a village near Bristol, a tall old man with a good suntan celebrated his birthday with some friends. After a party he played tennis and then went for a five mile walk with some of his guests. There was nothing unusual in this.

The man, whose name was Mr. Misha Weibold has been celebrating his birthday in this way for a long time. The only unusual thing is that Mr. Weibold was 85 years old yesterday.

"I don't walk as fast as I used to and my eyes aren't quite as good as before but otherwise I feel as fit as I was when I was 30".

When asked what his secret was for such a long and healthy life, he answered, "There are three things which I've always done and three things I've never done. First of all I've always walked at least 5 miles every day. Secondly I've always eaten very simply. Thirdly, I've always been in the habit of getting up early.

There are the three things which I've never done: I've never smoked a cigarette in all my life! I've never worried about anything. And I've never been married I've believed that marriage was a very unhealthy thing and now I am sure of it. When I was 60, I used to have a lot of friends who were married. And do you know where they are now? They are all dead".

So Mr. Weibold has always: He has never:

  1.  Walked at least 5 miles. 1. Smoked a cigarette.
  2.  Eaten very simply. 2. Worried about anything.
  3.  Got up early. 3. Been married.

worry.

T: We eat to live but not live to eat. Do you agree? Why, then, do so many overeat nowadays? And another unhealthy habit is eating fast food or junk food. Americans are the biggest junk food eaters. Do you know that in one day Americans eat 87 mln hot dogs. Over six million gallons (1 gallon is 3.79 litres) of popcorn are eaten daily. Is pizza your favourite food? You are not alone. Americans eat 75 (acre: 4046 m2) of it every day.

Let us read and discuss texts about some popular American foods.

peanut butter

Americans love to eat peanut butter. But what is peanut butter? It is a thick, creamy paste. You buy it in a jar at the grocery store. Manufacturers roast peanuts and take off the skin. Then they grind them into a thick paste that's peanut butter!

The peanut is not really a nut, but a pea. It is a strange pea because it grows underground. But peanut plants also have green vines with yellow flowers. These vines or stems grow above the ground. Peanuts are very healthy for you. They have more protein than a steak and they have many vitamins.

The peanut comes from South America, but peanut butter is a food that is truly "American". Peanut butter started in 1890 in St. Louis. A doctor made some peanut butter. He gave it to patients who could not eat regular food. Later, peanut butter was popular as a health food.

Peanut butter is very popular with children in the United States. Perhaps their favourite way to eat it is a sandwich. Many children add jelly to their peanut butter sandwiches. This makes a favourite snack or lunchtime meal.

II варіант

Popcorn

All corn does not pop. A seed or kernel of corn must have 14 per cent water in it to pop. Other kinds of corn have less water and do not pop. When you put a kernel of corn on a fire, the water inside makes the corn explode. This makes a "pop" noise. That is why it is called popcorn.

The American Indians popped corn a long time ago. The Indians knew there were three kinds of corn. There was sweet corn for eating, corn for animals, and corn for popping. The Indians introduced corn to the first settlers, or Pilgrims, when they came to America in 1620. One year after they came, the Pilgrims had a Thanksgiving dinner. They invited the Indians. The Indians brought food with them. One Indian brought popcorn!

Since that time Americans continued to pop corn at home. But in 1945 there was a new machine that changed the history of popcorn. This electric machine popped corn outside the home. Soon movie theatres started to sell popcorn to make more money. Popcorn at the movies became more and more popular. Today, Americans still continue the custom of eating popcorn at the movies.

Americans use 500,000 pounds of popcorn every year. Many people like to put salt and melted butter on their popcorn. Some people eat it without salt or butter. Either way Americans love popcorn!
