Introducing a talk

Good business practice.

This laboratory work looks in particular at introducing a talk or presentation. In an introduction, it is important for the speaker to:

Introduce himself;

Give a clear overview of the subject;

Tell the audience the structure that the talk will follow;

Tell the audience whether they can ask questions during the presentation or whether there will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the talk.

Cultural attitudes may have an impact on the following aspects of introducing a talk or presentation:

Formality (some cultures will start with jokes or anecdotes and others will begin more formally);

Audience participation (some cultures will expect the audience to participate, e.g. by asking direct questions that the audience are expected to respond to; in other cultures the audience's role is less participative);

Gestures and body language (some cultures use more expressive body language than others);

Audience reaction (in some cultures it will be easier to judge whether the audience is enjoying the presentation than others).

Look at the list of things to do when you open a presentation. Tick the five items that you think are most important. Explain your choice.

Greet the audience.

Tell a joke.

Introduce yourself.

Tell a story.

Make eye contact with the audience.

Include lots of statistics.

Tell people the subject of the talk.

Good business practice.

In some cultures, people explain events in sequence and quickly get to the main point. In other cultures, people can describe events in a different order. How do people describe events in your culture?

Fixed sequence

When talking about the history of a company or project in a presentation you structure events into a beginning, middle and end.

The background information builds towards a key piece of information.

You get to the point quickly and keep to the facts.

Flexible sequence

When talking about the history of a company or project in a presentation you may talk about different parts of the history, out of sequence. The background information can be as important as the main story. You talk around the subject and jump from point to point.

Presenting a company history

Write a report about the history of a company (15-20 sentences). Start your talk with an introduction and use phrases to sequence events.
