At the end of the lesson you should answer the questions about difficulties at the lesson and your impressions and fill in the chart to evaluate your  work at the lesson on your own. At our lesson tomorrow we’ll discuss your answers and compare my marks and yours.

For the lesson, you  need some posters(they are on the blackboard)which will help you.

So,let’s start.

  1.  Working in groups:

You were quite good at this kind of work and now we continue our lesson working in groups. Your home task was to make up  stories about different accidents. Group number 1,you’ve prepared the story “Accident on the Road”. And now your task is to start telling the story, stop in the middle and suggest one group to finish your story and the other group to ask questions to get more information about the accident. Use as many words on the topic as you can.

The beginning of the story:

Last summer my friend and me decided to go to the seaside by car. We were travelling along the road at around 40 mph as the road was very dangerous because of the yesterday’s heavy rain. Suddenly we noticed the sports car moving out to overtake us. It was speeding at around 60 mph. My friend braked slightly in order to let the driver of the sports car pass but……..

Pupils’ answer(the ending):

Suddenly the sports car driver put on the brakes, then the car skidded and crashed into a lorry parked at the side of the road. There  was a terrible crashing noise. My friend managed to swerve just in time. We were lucky to be alive. But after the accident my friend never drove again.

The variant of the story suggested by group number 1:

Instead of slowing down, our car skidded on the slippery surface and crashed into the sports car. As a result the sports car was knocked into the  motorcyclist coming from the other direction. The sports car and the motorcycle were severеly damaged in the collision and the driver of the sports car and the motorcyclist had to be taken to hospital. We were lucky that we didn’t suffer serious injuries in this accident but our car needed to be repaired.

Questions and Answers to the Story:

1.-Were there any witnesses of the accident?

-Yes, there was a passer-by who saw the accident.

2.-Was the driver of the sports car drunk?

-Yes, at the police station it was found out that the driver of the sports car was drunk.

3.-Was anybody crossing the road?

-Luckily nobody was crossing the road.

4.-Was your friend wearing seatbelts?

-Fortunately he was wearing  seatbelts.

4.0  Improving Speaking Skills:

Now we’re going to talk about “Fires at Home”. Let’s name  the causes of  fires.

Pupils’ answers:

-Children can take matches without permission and start a fire.

-A pan of oil which has been left unattended on the cooker could be the reason of the fire at home.

-The faulty electrical wiring could cause the fire, too.

4.1     Revising of the Lexis:

Now we’ll revise the lexis and your task is to give the explanations in English.

Pupils’ answers:

fire brigade - a group of people who work together to stop fires burning

race - to move quickly

flames - hot bright gas that you see when something is on fire

matches - small wooden or paper sticks with a special substance at the top that you use to light a fire, cigarette etc

ambulance - a special vehicle that is used to take people who are ill or injured to hospital

save - to take someone or something safe from danger, harm or destruction

put out the fire - to make a fire stop burning

pull someone to safety -to save someone

  1.  Working in groups:

You were quite good at this kind of work and now we continue our lesson working in groups. Group number 2-you’ve prepared the story “Fire at Home”. And now your task is to start telling the story, stop in the middle and suggest one group to finish your story and the other group to ask questions to get more information about the accident. Use as many words on the topic as you can.

The beginning of the story:

It was eleven o’clock on Wednesday morning. I was reading a book and drinking coffee in the garden. I smelt something burning. I looked around and noticed thick black smoke coming from the kitchen window of my neighbours house.

I called the fire brigade at once and ran over to the Smiths’ house. I had just spoken to Mrs Smith, she told me that she was going out for a walk with their dog. And I also knew that MrSmith was away on a business trip to London, so their two children, Tommy aged six and John aged eight, were alone in the house…….

Pupils’ answer(the ending):

John who was eight years old immediately ran through the smoke-filled house to wake his younger brother Tommy. His unconscious body was too heavy for the little boy to move alone. Luckily the door was unlocked. I rushed in and helped John to pull little Tommy to safety.

The variant of the story suggested by group number 2:

Fortunately the door was unlocked so I went in and raced to the kitchen. It was in flames. Little Tommy was lying unconscious on the floor with a box of matches in his hand. I wrapped him in a blanket and took him to the garden. John was locked in the bathroom and was screaming for help. Luckily the fire brigade arrived. The firefighters managed to save John and put out the fire.

Questions and Answers to the Story:

1.-Was the pan of oil left unattended on the cooker that could start fire?

-No, it wasn’t. Mrs Smith never left the cooker unattended.

2.-Was the reason of the fire the faulty electrical wiring?

-No, the electrical wiring wasn’t damaged.

3.-Did anyone else see the fire?

-No, no one saw the fire except the Smiths’ neighbour.

4.-Were the children crying for help?

-No, little Tommy was unconscious and his brother John was in the bathroom and no one could hear him crying.

5.0 Improving Speaking Skills:

Now we’re going to talk about Accidents in the Sea”. Let’s name the causes of these accidents.

Pupils’ answers:

-The accident in the sea could happen if the swimmers are not experienced.

-Bad weather causes the accidents in the sea.

-Accidents in the sea could happen because of the sharks.

-It’s very dangerous to swim in the sea just after lunch because you can have cramp in the legs.

5.1     Revising of the Lexis:

Now we’ll revise the lexis and your task is to give the explanations in  English.

Pupils’ answers:

Cramp - a severe pain that you get in part of your body when a muscle becomes too tight, making it difficult for you to move that part of your body

inexperienced swimmer - a swimmer who cannot swim  very well

come to rescue - to save someone

coastguard - the organization that help swimmers and ships that are in danger

witness the incident - to see something happen

dive - to swim under water

  1.  Working in groups:

You were quite good at this kind of work and now we continue our lesson working in groups. Group number 3-you’ve prepared the story “Accident in the Sea”. And now your task is to start telling the story, stop in the middle and suggest one group to finish your story and the other group to ask questions to get more information about the accident. Use as many words on the topic as you can.

The beginning of the story:

It was a hot summer day when my friend Dave and his wife Alison were  having a picnic on a quiet beach. Alison decided to go for a swim. Within seconds she realized that she had cramp in her legs.  Her husband quickly swam over  to save her…….

Pupils’ answer(the ending):

Dave was an experienced swimmer. He managed to save Alison just in time.

The variant of the story suggested by group number 3:

But by the time he had reached her, he too had cramp and they were both in trouble. Suddenly a dolphin came to their rescue. The lucky couple were able to hold on to the dolphin’s fin while it pulled them to safety. I think this accident should serve as a warning to others not to swim after eating.

Questions and Answers to the Story:

1.-Were there any boats to pull Alison to safety?

-Yes, there was a fishing boat but it was too far to come immediately to help.

2.-Were they noticed by the coastguard?

-Unfortunately there was no coastguard in this area.

3.-Did anyone witness the incident?

-No, the beach was alone.

4.-Were there any sharks nearby?

-No, there were no sharks nearby.

6.0     Summation of the Lesson:

So, our lesson is going to be over in a few minutes. You have some time to answer the questions on the copies and fill in the chart.
