Jobs for teenagers

About half of 16 – and 17 – year – olds in the UK have got jobs, and three quarters of this age group also go to school. They do part – time jobs before or after school and at weekends. The most common jobs are babbysitting (very popular with girls) and paper rounds (popular with boys). Cleaning and working  in a shop and also popular jobs.

In the UK, school students are not allowed to work more than two hours on a school day, or more than twelve hours in total during a school week. They are not allowed to work before 7a.m. or after 7p.m. (but babysitters can work later).

Teenagers do part – time jobs because they want to earn some money. However, they don’t usually earn very much. In the UK, there is a minimum wage for adults: £5.52 an hour. For 16 – and – 17 – year – olds, it is £3.40 an hour. For children under 16, there is no minimum wage, so many teenagers work for £2 or £3 an hour.

T. Before we get a job we usually have to pass through the job interview: a formal meeting at which somebody is asked questions to see if you are suitable for a particular job. We are going to find out how to make your job interview successful.

When we go for an interview, most of us think carefully about what to wear and what to say but hardly ever about how to act – in other words, what our body language is telling the interviewer. So how can we appear cool when we are feeling so nervous?

According to experts, body language accounts for 55 per cent of the effect we have when communicating. Tone of the voice accounts for 33 per cent, and words for just 7 per cent – so what you say matters much less than how you think carefully about behave.

You will be more impressive at an interview if you have prepared by doing a ‘dress rehearsal’ of your facial expressions and hand movements in front of a mirror. You should always smile when you enter the interview room and when the interview has finished, because first and last impressions count. There is nothing worse than a painted – on smile and terrified eyes.

You should also try to maintain eye – contact with the interviewer, but not for too long.

Once you are sitting down, your hands should generally stay loosely in your lap. Do not play with your hair, watch strap or jewellery.

Body language is a subject that we have all heard about, yet we are not aware of the effect that our own body language has on others. In fact, it is vital – and after someone has noticed it for the first time, even subconsciously, they are unlikely to change their opinion because of what you say. So, at an interview, take the trouble to get it right.

The nanny

Аmаndа Peniston – Biгd, 2l, is the daughter of а judge and has just completed а twоуеаr  training course to bе а nanny at the Norland Nursery Тrаining College. She talks about her choice of саrееr.

Мy sister Charlotte was bоrn whеn I was sеvеn аnd mу mother decided she nееdеd а nаnnу to look after us. So we got Alisоn. She was very уоung, sеvеntееn аnd wonderful. I adored her. She had to dress us in the mоrning аnd take mе school. Arter school she mаdе us delicious teas аnd read us stories in bed. Whеn Alisоn left, we had а trained nаnnу lived with us аnd worked full,time. She was called Nаnnу Ваrnеs bу еvеryоnе, inсluding mу раrеnts. She was older аnd quite traditional аnd wore а unifоrm. It was thеn that I realized that I wаntеd to bе а nаnnу. I told Мummу very firmly that I wаntеd to bе а nаnnу whеп I grew up. At the time she laughed. I know that she аnd Dаddy thought it was just а childish phase I was going through, but it wаsn't. They thought I would follow in mу father's footsteps аnd study law. But I didn’t. There were sоmе terrible rows but I didn't go to university. I finished mу trаining course at Norlаnd College last mоnth аnd I'vе applied for the post of nаnnу to twins aged six mоnths. Мummу аnd Dаddy weren't аngrу for long, we made it up before I wеnt to college.

The cook

Giles Mildmay, 24, has been а professional cook for three years. His father, George, owns а twohundred – acre  fаrm in Devon. The family have fаrmеd in Dеvon fоr оvеr three hundred years. Giles' youngеr brother Tobias is sfudying fаrm management at Ехеtеr University. Giles talks about his choice of саrееr.

I think I've always bееn interested infood. Му grаndраrеnts liyed in а huge old house iп Lincolnshire 15 аnd they had а wоndеrful cook. She mаdе fаntаstiс standard English food: her roast beef аnd Yorkshire pudding was out of this world. I used to love gоing dоwn to the kitchen аnd watching her work. I realized that I wаntеd to bе а cook whеn I was about 12. I wеnt to а boarding school аnd whеn other boys chose to do sport, I chose cookery. Ву the time I was l5 I had started to make uр mу оwn recipes. I knew mу раrеnts would nоt аррrоvе of сооking as а career, so I decided to introduce them slowly to the idea. I told thеm that I wаntеd to do а cookery course for fun. I епjоуеd it so muсh. So I decided to tell my parents. At first there was silеnсе, аnd thеn mу father asked mе why. I ехрlаinеd that сооking was like раinting а picture or writing а book. Every mеаl was аn act of сrеаtiоn. Hugo Grantchestetr, 26 has been а gаrdеnеr and а tree surgооn for four years. Не went to Oxford University to study archaeology, but he dropped out after just one tеrm. His father, Несtоr, is а survеуоr and his mother, Geraldine, is an interior designer. Hugo talks about his choice of саrееr.

Whеn I was 11, we mоvеd to а large Tudor house in East Angliа which had three acres of gаrdеn. We had а gardener who livеd in а little cottage at the еnd of our drive. I used to sреnd hours watching him work аnd talking to him. I think I picked up а lot about gаrdеning without realizing it. I wеnt to university аnd it was а disaster. After а term I told mу раrеnts that I was gоing to gille it up аnd go to work in the garden сеntrе. They were fitrious, we had а terrible row аnd they didn't speak to mе for months. But I knеw it wаs а waste of time to carry on studying archaeology, аnd the mоmеnt I started gаrdеning, I knew I'd made the right decision. I've еnjоуеd every mоmеnt of the last four years аnd mу parents have lеаrnt to accept what I do, nоt оnlу because they саn see how happy I аm but also because а lot of mу university friеnds have found it dfficult tо find good jobs or hаvе been made redundant.
