1  To enrich pupils' knowledge in vocabulary and to develop their habits and skills in using it in various exercises.

2  To develop pupils' language skills in hearing, reading, speaking dialogue and in writing.

3  To develop pupils' attention, memory, initiative.


  •  Visual materials "Animals";
  •  posters;
  •  textbook;
  •  workbook;
  •  flash cards;
  •  pictures of animals;
  •  word cards for the new words;
  •  toys of animals (soft and made of rubber);
  •  crossword "Animals".

Lesson Structure:

  1.  Warming up activity.
  2.  Pronunciation drill.
  3.  Teaching Vocabulary.
  4.  Communicative Practice.
  5.  Lesson summary.
  6.  Homework.


1  Warming up activity

T: Hi, my dear friends! I'm glad to see you. I like to play very much. Let's name as many animals as you can. I want to play a team game. We divide class in half. Think of an animal beginning with "s". I write "s" on the board. The first team to call out an animal scores a point.

2  Pronunciation drill

Material: A song "The animals walk two by two". (The teacher shows the pictures of the animals). First listen to tape 43 and then the work is done in chorus).

3  Teaching Vocabulary

a) Presentation of new word, words-combinations. Pictural and written representation of words on the blackboard: sea, mountains, snow, whales, pandas, eagles, sharks, hot, cold, beautiful, sharp, penguins; deserts, forests, rivers, parrots, bears, hippos, camels; to come from, to like cold water, to live in the sea.

b) Assimilation of the Vocabulary.

1) Pronunciation drill.

T: Listen to the words. Pronounce them in unison by imitating the pronunciation of the teacher, then individually and after in unison again.

2) Label the pictures.

T: Look at the pictures on the blackboard. Do you know the names in English? Tell your teacher and put the words to the pictures.

3) Write down the new words into your vocabularies.

4  Communicative Practice

1) Listening – reading.

T: Listen to tape 42 and try to remember where the animals live (Ex. 1, p. 58).

T: Let's read the text and translate into Ukrainian.

T: Listen to tape 42 and write the right letter in your textbooks (Ex. 2, p. 58).

2) Pair work (Ex. 3, p. 58).

T: Children, ask and answer about the animals in the small pictures above. Use the example: Where do they live? They live in the sea. They like cold water. (I do this exercise in pairs and then repeat with the whole class).

3) Speaking (Individually work).

T: Put your toy animals on the desk and tell me please: Where do they come from? Where do they live? What do they like?

4) Writing (Crossword).

T: Complete the crossword. I'll read you the description of animals and try to guess what animal is it and write its name in the crossword.

5  Lesson summary

T: Have you learnt anything new for you at the lesson? Do you remember new words well? Let's remember them together. I'll divide class in half. Pupils name the animals. The first team which names more than 9 animals is a winner.

6  Homework – Ex. 3, p. 58 (in writing) Project work "Animals".
