3. Oral Practice
Lets listen to about the first books.
Pupil 1. The earliest books were written on tablets of wood. In Greece and Rome the tablets of wood were covered with wax, and writing was impressed upon them. These tablets were held together on one side with thin strips of leather or metal rings. In Assyria and Babylonia clay tablets were used for writing and the words were drawn with a piece of wood. After baking, the tablets were kept on shelves, just like books are kept today. The earliest books of the ancient world were written on papyrus and skins of young animals. The books were rolled from one cylinder to another.
Paper was invented in China in the 1st century. The secret of papermaking came to Europe much later.
Answer the questions:

Where were the clay tablets kept?

Lets listen to about the first printed books.
Pupil 2. Printing went quickly over Europe and by the end of the 15th century there were more than 200 presses. The early printers were not only craftsmen, but also editors, publishers and booksellers. The first printing press in England was set up by William Caxton at Westminster in 1476. printed books soon reached a very high standard and craftsmen were rightfully proud of their work. Eventually there were more and more people in Europe who could read and they wanted more and more books. That led to opening more libraries.

It is the library. You can go there if you want to take out a book and read it at home or if you want to read the books at the library.
What is the library? It is a big, light room. There are many bookcases and bookshelves with a lot of books on them.
You can see novels, poems, plays, books on history, geography, and arts at the library. Adventure books are very popular. You can see a reading room on the right with many tables and chairs where you can read books, newspapers, and magazines. You can find millions of books by the greatest writers and poets well-known all over the world.
Pupils go to the library to read books, to look through some new magazines and to prepare for their reports. The librarian helps the pupils to find the books they need. Many teachers go to the school library, too. Sometimes the teachers prepare for the lessons at the school library.
