Theme: ”We and the English-speaking world. Comparing cultures.”

Type of the lesson: non-standard, “ A Round Table”.

Equipment: computers, multimedia complex, thematical pictures, nati-

onal symbols of Ukraine, Bulgaria and Germany, maps of Ukraine, Bulgaria and Germany, pupil’s presentation.

Target of the lesson: topical evaluation, to compare cultures of three

.   countries.

Tasks: 1) To practice the pupils in English speaking to improve their

   skills and habits in English communication.

 2) To generalize the pupils’ knowledge about cultures of dif-

 ferent cultures of the world, in particular Ukraine, People’s

 Republic of Bulgaria and Germany.

 3) To develop children’s interest and respectable attitude to-

 wards cultures of different countries.

Guests: investors from Germany, representatives of school administ-

 ration, correspondents from local mass media, teachers of the


Review: topics: “Customs and traditions”,” Cooking traditions”, “Mass Media”, “Way of life”.

  Procedure of the lesson:

  1.  Introduction: Good morning to everybody! Today we have very unusual lesson. Today you’ll have the topical evaluation and our control work will be in the form of a Round Table. You see a lot of people at our lesson. Let me introduce them. I’m glad to introduce you our guests from Germany Peter Freundlieb and Julius Zaitsek. We invited the representatives of local mass media (The Press and TV ), our teachers and school administration.
  2.  Main part of the lesson:.

1. Oral speech: So let’s get down to work. Well, today we’ll compare the cultures Ukraine, Bulgaria and Germany. And I hope our guests from Germany will help us, won’t they?

( The guests introduce themselves and tell some words about their country and their mission in Ukraine.)

On the screen there is the slide:” Questions for discussion”.

Teacher: Children! Today we’ll discuss the following questions:

  •  Traditions and holidays;
  •  Mass media;
  •  Level of life;
  •  Way of life, characters of people;
  •  Cooking traditions.

And we’ll begin with traditions. So, different countries have different traditions, holidays and customs. You see some pupils are wearing national costumes. I think they will explain us the reason:

  1.  A boy and a girl worn in national Ukrainian costumes hand in the German guests bread and salt on the national Ukrainian towel and speak about Ukrainian national holidays and traditions.
  2.  The second pair of pupils worn in Bulgarian national costumes hand in the German guests the Bulgarian national dish ”banitsa”

and spring symbols “martinichki”.

  1.   Teacher: Children, do you have any questions to our guests?

Pupils: Dear guests! Tell us, please, about the most interesting holidays and traditions of your country.

On the screen there is another slide: “ Mass media”.

Teacher: You know that Ukraine is one of democratic countries of the world. And today you can see representatives of local newspaper and TV companies. Let’s compare mass media in Ukraine and in Germany. Who will begin this talking?

(2 pupils tell about main newspapers and magazines, TV channels in Ukraine. Then pupils ask questions to the guests about main TV channels and the main items which are highlighted in German news-

papers and magazines).

On the screen there are the next slides:” Level of life.Way of life, characters of people.”

Teacher: The next question for discussion is level of life. Children,

tell me, please, what do they mean by “ level of life”?

And now tell me, please, why different people are so different: some

of them are successful and rich and have high incomes, but the other

live in poverty. What does it depend on?

( Pupils speak about ways of life of different people, about different

approaches to life and different targets in life).

Teacher: Children, what do you want to ask our guests about?

Pupils: Are you for the first time in Ukraine?

 What are your impressions of Ukrainian people?

Teacher: There is the last slide on the screen: “Cooking traditions”.

And the last item on our agenda is “ Kitchen” Who wants to speak about Ukrainian cooking traditions and Bulgarian national dishes?

Maybe you will share with your most interesting recipes with us?

( 2 pupils are talking about interesting dishes of both countries. Then pupils ask questions to the guests about Ukrainian and German kit-


2. Work with the text: Children, you know that the capital of Germany is …( Berlin). And do you know how many Berlins are there in the world? Let’s translate the article from one of Ukrainian magazines on this subject. The matter is our guests don’t understand Ukrainian and we’ll help them.

3. Practicing in writing skills: It’s a pity but our lesson is going to finish. What do you think about our today’s lesson? What do you want to wish to our guests? You may write it using the computer.

(Pupils are printing on computers during 2-3 minutes, then they read their writings).

  1.  Analysis and conclusion of the lesson, evaluation.

Teacher: Now I want to thank our guests for participation in today’s lesson and interesting information about their country and I want to give some souvenirs in memory of our lyceum. Do you also want to tell our guests anything?

(The pupils speak about their impressions of the lesson and invite the guests to come to lyceum again. The guests are offered to tell the final speech).)
