New Year

    Not all English people celebrate New Year. Those who do celebrate it on the 31st of December. A lot of people go to Trafalgar Square to see the Christmas tree. They have a New Year party at home. On that day they wish their nearest and dearest a “Happy New Year”. When Big Ben strikes twelve they drink a toast to the New Year.

    In America people celebrate New Year, too. They visit their relatives and friends or have parties at home.

    English and American people often make New Year resolutions – they are promises for the New Year.

    Children make New Year resolutions, too. This is what is Paul, an English boy, wrote:”I often make resolutions but I don’t always keep them. This year I am going:

  •  To help my mum about the house;
  •  To be nice to my little sister;
  •  To do exercises every morning;
  •  Not to be late for school;
  •  To go to the swimming pool every day.

    My mum isn’t going to eat chocolates, bread or spaghetti. Dad is going to play tennis every day. My mum and dad usually keep resolutions but I don’t”.

T. pronounces the words in bold, reads the sentences with them, pupils repeat.

Finish the sentences:

1. A lot of people go…

2.  On that day they wish …

3. Children make…

4. My Mum and Dad…

Find English equivalents:

1. Вони проводять новорічну вечірку вдома.

2. В цьому році я збираюсь…

3. Тато збирається грати в теніс кожного дня.

4. Не спізнюватись до школи.

Agree or disagree:

1. In America people don’t celebrate New Year.

2. When Big Ben strikes 11 people drink a toast.

3.  A lot of people go to Trafalgar Square to see the Christmas tree.

4.  Not all English people celebrate New Year.

Find and read the sentences which prove that:

1. Children make New Year resolutions.

2. Some English people celebrate New Year.

3. In America people celebrate New Year.

4. Parents make New Year’s resolutions too.

Answer the questions:

What are New Year’s resolutions? Do you make New Year’s resolutions? What are they? Do you always keep them?
