Suggested level – A2 pre-intermediate

Objectives:

-to practice vocabulary on the topic;

-to develop pupils’ speaking, writing, listening and reading skills;

-to motivate pupils to study English;

-to encourage pupils to work in pairs and groups.

Equipment: flashcards, chart, a tape-recorder, cassettes, a computer, pictures.

Procedure

Ι. Introduction

T: Good morning! How are you today?

Ps: Fine, thank you. We’re doing very well.

T: Look at the blackboard. What can you see on it?

Ps’ possible answers: salt, meat, bacon, oil,…

T: Can you guess the topic of the lesson?

Ps: Food.

T: You are right. Could you write it on the blackboard?

And look at the screen and read the continuation of the topic – Cooking traditions. Table manners.

The motto of the lesson is: “Live not to eat, but eat to live.”

T: Today we’ll revise vocabulary on the topic, make up dialogues, listen to the text, sing a song, visit TV show and even take part in it.

T: Well, let’s get into English language spirit. Listen and repeat after me:

4. Listening

1) Pre-listening

T: Do you like watching TV? And what about shows? Do you watch them?

2) While-listening

Listen to the part of the TV show.

5. I see you are a little bit tired. Let’s do some physical exercises.

6. Role-play.

T: You have  heard how Englishmen lay the table. And what about you? Can you lay the table? I need one pupil. Come up here, please. Try to lay the table. Do and comment it.

7. Reading

T: Thank you. I see you can lay the table and now let’s revise table manners. Look at the screen and read them.

Try to make no noise when eating.

Never read when you eat.

Do not eat off the knife.

Take small pieces.

Don’t talk with your mouth full.

First chew then swallow.

Don’t put your elbows on the table.

Don’t make faces or noises to show that you don’t like the dish.

Don’t forget to say “Thank you”.

Keep yourself tidy.

8. Writing

T: Let’s imagine that we are the participants of the popular show “Pekel’na kukhnia”. Have ever watched it? How many teams take part in it? Yes, you are right. There are two of them: “Blues” and “Reds”. I’ll divide the same way. Your task is to write “Menu” including: an appetizer, a soup, a main course, a dessert and a drink. Write the recipe and the way of preparation. I think this music won’t irritate you.

ΙV. Home assignment

T: Write email letter to your pal friend about cooking tradition in your family.

V.  Summing-up

T: I’d like to thank everyone for good work in the lesson. Your marks are…  We have one minute left. I want you leave our lesson in a good mood so let’s sing the song “ I like food”.
