New Years Day is the most favourite of all holidays in Ukraine. We give New Year presents; children receive their presents under the New Year’s Tree on the morning of the 1st of January. The main folk heroes of this holiday are Father Frost (Did Moroz) and his granddaughter Snigurochka (The Snow Girl).

Тема урока: Праздники.

Цели урока:

- практическая – повторить и активизировать ЛЕ-темы;

- образовательная – научить учащихся  рассказывать о своих любимых праздниках;

- развивающая – путём тренировочных упражнений продолжить работу по обучению монологическому и диалогическому высказыванию по теме;

- воспитательная – продолжить работу по воспитанию заинтересованности детей к изучению английского языка;

помочь учащимся достичь максимальной творческой самореализации каждого ученика;

стимулировать стремление к знаниям;

совершенствовать навыки самостоятельной работы и презентаций своих сообщений.

Оборудование: компьютер, проектор, запись песни, лёгкая музыка для хорошего настроения, кроссворды.

Ход урока:

1. Приветствие

Teacher: Good morning, pupils, teachers and guests! Welcome to our lesson!

T.: Dear guests, attention! There are two guests from Ukraine and Canada at our lesson. They are Betsy and Tanya. Let me introduce them!

T.: Good morning, Betsy! Glad to see you!

T.: Hello, Tanya! Nice to meet you!

Tanya: Nice meeting you, too!

T.: And now girls introduce yourselves!

Betsy: My name is Betsy. I am from Canada. My favourite holidays are Thanksgiving Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. We celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday of November. Mother’s Day is celebrated in March. Father’s Day is celebrated in June.

Tanya: My name is Tanya. I live in Ukraine. We celebrate many holidays in our country. I should say I like all of them. Celebrating is my joy. I like greeting guests at my home. And what about you? What’s your favourite holidays?

T.: Our conversation is about some of the holidays. A great number of holidays can be divided into several types.

T.: Now, pupils, your hometask was to read the text about holidays. Lets open your books and read the text (ex. 1, page 64 “What are holidays?”).

Let us speak about Ukrainian and English holidays.

  1.  What are many holidays like?

P.: Many holidays are days when you don’t have to go to school.

  1.  What are holidays for?

P.: Holidays are often fun-filled days when our family gets together for a big dinner or a
picnic

  1.  What does the word “holiday” mean?

P.: The word “holiday” means a “holy” day – a day, on which people thank and honor God.

T.: What way do people celebrate these holidays?

Pupil 1: It depends on the date itself and country, its national traditions and customs.

T.: The first public holiday is New Year’s Day. What do you know about it?

Pupil 2: As for me I like New Year’s Day and I’ll speak about it now.

Pupil 3: And my favourite holiday is Victory Day, and I’ll speak about it now.

Victory Day, May 9th, 1945 was a happy day for the people of our country and all the countries which fought for the victory over the fascist armies. Victory Day is celebrated in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
The eternal memory of those lost will last forever throughout the generations.

Pupil 4: As for me my favourite holiday is Independence Day.

My name is Katya. I’m Ukrainian. I’m proud of my country. I would like to tell you about Independence Day. August, the 24th - Independence Day. It is Ukraine’s largest State holiday. The Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine was adopted by the Ukrainian parliament on August 24th 1991. The act established Ukraine as an independent Democratic state.

T.: Nowadays Ukrainian people like to celebrate religious holidays. The first religious
     holiday is Christmas.

Pupil 5: My favourite holiday is Christmas.

The period from the 7th of January until the 14th of January is Saint Christmas week. During this week people go from one house to another, singing songs and wishing good wishes of health, prosperity and just having a good time. The songs are called “Kolyadky” and “Schedrivky”. It is believed that everything that the people have sung in their Kolyadka and Schedrivka will come true.

T.: The most popular song nowadays is “Jingle Bells”. My dear friends, I have presents for
you on the eve of Christmas. (Christmas presents). And let us sing a song!

P.: The traditional greeting of this day is “Christos Voskres!” and the answer is “Voistinu  Voskres!”

T.: Children, which holiday did we have on the 19th of December?

P.: It was St. Nicholas’ Day. As for me it’s my favourite holiday.

St. Nicholas’ Day is the holiday for young children. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children. On this day parents and relatives surprised their kids with small gifts, toys or books under their pillows.
          Every child who behaved well during the year will receive a present from St. Nicholas on the day. Nowadays it has become traditional to present gifts to every child.

T.:  Nowadays it has become traditional to celebrate the very British and American holidays as St. Valentine’s Day and Halloween.

14th of February is St. Valentine’s Day inherited from Western culture, is now very popular in Ukraine.
