In my opinion, rubbish is the biggest problem. People put a lot of rubbish into rubbish dumps. This pollutes the ground and the water. My family tries to help the environment. At home we recycle most of our rubbish. We put paper, glass and plastic into special containers outside our house. In my view, this is a great system because it really helps the environment.

  •  to motivate them in expressing their own opinions on the topic;
  •  to teach students to save the environment.



T: Good morning, everybody. Glad to see you. How are you today? Everybody's fine? So, everybody is ready to have a new lesson today.

  1.  WARM-UP

T: For the start, I'd like you to write the quotation of Dalai Lama by letters, to explain the meaning of it and try to guess what the topic of our lesson is.

Students write the quotation by letters and predict the topic of the lesson.

"Mother planet is showing us the red warning light - "be careful" – she is saying. To take care of the planet is to take care of our own house. "

T: Now find the separate words and read the sentence. What can you say about this quotation?

Ss: The planet is our home. We should do everything to keep it the beautiful place. That's why we should take care of our planet and try to help the environment before it's too late.

T: So, have you guessed what the topic of our lesson is?

Ss: The topic of our lesson is the "Environment".

T: Yes, you are right. Today you are going to speak about environmental problems and suggest ways how to help the environment. You will improve your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills on the topic.


T: As we are going to speak about the environment, let's listen to the Native American poem. Try to say what it is about.

Tapescript: Only when all the rivers have run dry

                    and all the fish in the sea have died

                  Only when all the rainforests

                  have been burnt down

                  and there is no food for the animals

                 Only when all the blue skies have been

                 killed with smoke

                 And the cities of the world have choked

T: So, what is the poem about?

Ss: It's about the damage we are doing to our planet. It is a warning of what might happen in the future.


T: Act out the dialogue.

Ben  Hi, Tina. How are you? Have you finished the posters for the environment club yet?

Tina  Yes, I have. They are really fantastic! Have you asked your friends to join the club yet?

Ben  Yes, I have. I told them about it yesterday. They all want to join!

Tina  That's fantastic! Three of my friends have already joined the club, so we've got a lot of members now.

Ben  Good, have you written the members' names in our club book yet?

Tina  Yes, I have. I also made some club stickers last night.

Ben  Cool! Can I have some stickers, too?

Tina  Sorry, Ben! I gave all of them to my friends yesterday.

Ben  Oh. Well, have you chosen a name for the club?

Tina  Yes, I have. It's called Worldwatch.

Ben  Great! See you on Friday.

Tina  OK. Bye!


T: Now imagine, there is a new environment club Worldwatch at your school and you are the members of it. Will you answer my questions, please.

T: How often do you meet?

Ss: We meet every Friday.

T: What are you interested in?

Ss: We are interested in all kinds of environmental problems.

T: So, what is the environment?

Ss: The environment is everything around us. It includes all living things such as animals, birds, insects, trees, plants and people. It also includes everything that is not alive: the land, the air and the water.

T: Listen to a programme about the environment in everyday life and complete the sentences.

T: Read and match the texts with the pictures (Appendix 3).

  1.  My city is greener than most cities. There are lots of trees and recycling bins everywhere. The only problem is the pollution. I always use public transport to protect the environment.
  2.  Every year my school organizes a trip to a park near my house. We collect all the litter and then we plant some trees. We want to make the most beautiful park in the city.
  3.  My mum wants to protect the environment. She collects all our bottles, cans and newspapers during the week. Then, on Saturdays we go to the local supermarket. There are lots of recycling bins there.
  4.  I don't do much to help the environment. I usually forget to turn off the light when I leave a room and I don't recycle. But I never throw litter in the streets and I hate seeing people do it.

T: How eco – friendly are you? Ask and answer with a partner.

T: Well, now tell us about environmental problems and say how you help the environment.

S1: The biggest problem in today's world is the environment. There is a lot of pollution and a lot of animals are in danger. We can all help the environment and become more eco – friendly. I am eco – friendly, because I try to help the environment everyday.

S2: In my opinion, rubbish is the biggest problem. People put a lot of rubbish into rubbish dumps. This pollutes the ground and the water. My family tries to help the environment. At home we recycle most of our rubbish. We put paper, glass and plastic into special containers outside our house. In my view, this is a great system because it really helps the environment.

S3: Another problem is air pollution. Cars cause most of the air pollution in the world. A lot of people become ill because of the unclean air. My family tries to help the environment. We've got a car, but we don't use it a lot. My dad cycles to work and I always walk to school.

S4: In my view, we must save water. It's very important. I save water because I turn the tap off when I brush my teeth. Also, I always have a shower and I never have a bath. It really helps. I tell my family to save water, too. We must all try to help the environment.

S5: I also think that we must save electricity. I save electricity because I always switch off lights. I switch off my TV and computer, too and I close windows in winter. It's easy, and it saves a lot of electricity.   

T: So, there are a lot of things we can do to help the environment. What are they?


  •  Plant trees.
  •  Don't cut down trees.
  •  Never light fires in forests.
  •  Don’t throw rubbish in the street. Use rubbish bins.
  •  Recycle magazines, newspapers, bottles and cans.
  •  Have a shower, not a bath.
  •  Save energy. Switch off lights and TV.
  •  Save water. Turn off the tap.
  •  Use public transport. Cars pollute the air.
  •  Cycle or walk.
  •  Close windows in winter.


T: Let's make up a conclusion of the lesson. What have you learnt today? What can you do now?

Ss: I can talk about environmental problems. I can suggest some ways of solving these problems.

T: That's great. My advice is very simple: if you really want to do something to protect the environment, just do it, don't wait till anybody else will do it for you.


T: Write about your area and its environmental problems.
