Theme: The Best Place for Holidays                                                Form 8

Objectives:   SWBAT

  •  speak about the best place for holidays;
  •  act out the dialogue about visiting interesting places;
  •  identify the past tenses;
  •  put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense;
  •  report about Vicky’s holidays in Madrid;
  •  in groups write the letter to a pen friend according to the plan;
  •  get to know if they “can taste the flower seeds”.

The motto of the lesson:

Travel broadens the mind!

Materials:

textbooks “Enterprise 3”, workbooks, audio records, cards with tasks, blanks for letters, presentation.

The procedure of the lesson

   I. Beginning of the lesson

T: Good morning, students. It’s nice to see you today! Are you in a good mood?  I’m sure, you are.

   II. Introduction of the topic and aims

T: Have a look on the board. What’s the topic of our today’s lesson? (Slide 1)

S: The topic is “The best place to for holidays”.

T: Yes, you are right! And the motto of our lesson is “Travel broadens the mind”, because who travels much and see much - knows a lot.

    Today at the lesson we’ll speak about the best place for holidays, listen to the dialogue about visiting Malta, revise and identify the past tenses, put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense, read Vicky’s letter about her holidays in Madrid, in groups write the letter  to a pen friend according to the plan, get to know if you “can taste the flower seeds”. (Slide 2)

   III. Warming up

T: Look at the places where people can have a good rest on holidays. Tell where would you like to go for holidays? (Slide 3)

S1: I’d like to go for holidays to some exotic places, because I like to taste exotic food.

S2: And I would like to go to Yalta, because I dream to see the fabulous castle “The Swallow Nest”.

S3: I’d like to go to the Carpathian Mountains, because I dream about going up the Hoverla and watch the incredible view.

S4: I’d love to go to Crete. I have just read about it and want to see the ancient city of Knossos.

S5: I would like to go to Turkey, because there are lots of fantastic beaches there…..

  IV. Listening

T: Thank you for your ideas. Now we are going to listen to the dialogue of two girls about holidays in Malta. Your task is to write down the adjectives from these dialogues, which are used with the following nouns: Malta, hotel, weather, beaches, and food. (Slide 4)

(Students listen to the dialogue for the first time and work on the cards)

T: Let’s check up your answers. (Slide 4)

S1: Malta is fantastic.

S2: The hotel is beautiful.

S3: The weather is warm and sunny.

S4: The beaches are really gorgeous.

S5: The food is delicious.

T: You have coped with this task very easy. So try to answer these   questions about Malta. What is Malta like? Where will the girls stay? What is the weather like there? Are there nice beaches? What about the food? (Slide 5)

(Students listen to the dialogue for the second time and work on the cards)

  V. Pair works. Dialogical speech

T: And now act out a similar dialogue trying to persuade your partner to go on holidays with you. (See two previous exercises)

S1: What is Malta like?

S2: It’s really fantastic.

S1: Where will we stay?

S2: At a beautiful hotel in Valetta.

S1: What’s the weather like there?

S2: It’s usually warm and sunny.

S1: Are there any nice beaches?

S2: Yes, there are some gorgeous ones.

S1: How about the food?

S2: Oh, it’s delicious – and there’s a great variety to choose from.

S1: It sounds perfect. I’d love to come.

   VI. Grammar review

T: Well done! Then tell what did you do while you were on holidays? Read the sentences and identify the tenses in bold. Then match them with the tense description. (Slide 6)

S1: The first sentence is in Past Simple. It is an action which happened in the past at the definite moment

S2: The second sentence is in Past Continuous. It is longer past action which was interrupted by the shorter one.

S3: The third sentence is in Present Perfect Continuous. It is an action which started in the past and lasted for some time. 

S4: The fourth sentence is in Present Perfect. It is past action having visible results in the present.

   VII. Writing. Grammar practice

T: Look at the photo, read the sentences and put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense. Then we’ll check up your answers. (Slide 7)

T: Here are some more sentences for you. Test yourself and your neighbour will be your teacher. (Slide 8)

   VIII. Reading

T: Thanks for your answers. I’m proud of you. That’s why I propose you to “travel in Vicky’s letter” to the capital of Spain – Madrid.  If you don’t know it is a very beautiful city with lots of places to visit:

the Plaza Monumental - a large city stadium, where bullfights take place

the Prado Museum – one of the biggest museums in the world

Paella – traditional food in Spain, a dish made of shellfish and vegetables.   (Slide 9)

     

T: Read Vicky’s letter. Talk about the weather in Madrid, its sights, food and activities she had there. (Slide 10)

S1: The weather was fine there.

S2: They have already been to the Plaza Monumental and a large city stadium. However, they haven’t been to the Prado Museum yet.

P3: She tried Paella at a restaurant. The food was delicious and the service was excellent.

   IX. Group work. Writing a letter

 T: Would you like to go for holidays to Madrid? Probably, you would. But first in groups write the letter about some places you were in on holidays. Be attentive, while writing the letter describing your stay at a holiday resort, you should talk about the place,

accommodation, the weather, sights you have visited, activities you have been doing, the food, any good or bad experience you have had. Organize your thoughts in paragraphs.  Use the plan.  (Slide 11)

(Pupils work in small groups, and then present the letters in the class)

Group 1: Write about your visit to Paris (the Eiffel Tower, the Mona Lisa, frog’s legs)

Group 2: Write about your visit to London (the Tower of London, the Big Ben, traditional English tea with milk)

Group 3: Write about your visit to Egypt (the Cairo Tower, pyramids, the Sphinx, exotic food)

Group 4:  Write about your visit to Turkey (the Blue Tower, gorgeous beaches, Bоrek- пиріжки з сиром та шпинатом)

  X. Home assignment

T: Thank you for your letters. They were really very interesting. Today you worked in groups. And at home you’ll have an opportunity to write a letter about your real holidays yourself. Don’t forget to put it into the envelope and write the address.

  XI. Summing up. Marking

T: In the Koran there is such a line Bread feeds the body, indeed, but flowers feed also the soul and brain.” So, tell can you taste the seeds? Which cloud are you on?
