T: How are you today? I hope everything is O.K.  P., how's business?

P: I'm sure I'm fine.

T: What about you, V.?

T: I'm glad to hear you are fine. K, does anything trouble you?

K: Nothing at all. I'm eager to start our lesson.

T: So, let's begin our lesson. I hope you'll be creative and active during our today's lesson.

3. Presentation of the topic and the aim of the lesson

The topic of our today's lesson is "My native land-our glorious Donbas". It is devoted to our little Motherland -the Donetsk Region.

The problem of the lesson is to prove that our region is really one of the most important centres of our country. We have also to give ideas how to make Donbas better because Donbas is our little Motherland.

II. Warming-up

So, I offer you to speak about Donbas in order to increase your ability to speak English. What do you think about your native land?

P1: My native land ... A cherry garden flourishing in spring, a quiet river, a field of sunflowers that stretches of beyond the horizons.

P2: My native land ... The street where my friends and I live, the school we all go to, the old park we used to play in when we were kids.

P3: And now I want to recite a poem "Native land" by Volodymyr Symonenko.

Native land of mine! My mind is brighter,

Tenderness and love in my soul grow,

When your mighty hopes and dreams uplifting.

In my life here, strong and steady flow.

You are bread for me, my aim for living.

5. Preparation for the work

So, today we honour our glorious Donetsk Region, we wish it would be independent, prosperous and happy. I hope you'll be hard-working and energetic during our lesson. Let's start then.

The Flag of the Donetsk Region

The Flag of the Donetsk Region is not just a piece of cloth. It is an expression of human hopes and ideals of our long-suffering land. The field of the flag is divided into 2 parts. The cloudless blue sky lent its colour to the upper part of the flag. The golden rays of the rising sun embody the broad horizons open to the people of the eastern part of Ukraine. The bottom field of the flag is black with 5 horizontal golden stripes. The black background symbolizes the soil and the coal of our native land. The stripes represent the night reflection of the Azov Sea. The Flag of the Donetsk Region represents the past and the present of our people and their future too.

The Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms of the Donetsk Region was created on the basis of the Uzov symbol of the 19th century. The present design was approved in 1999. It looks like a semicircular shield with the Mertsalov Palm on it. The original Mertsalov Palm was made of a metal rail. The height of this real masterpiece is 3 meters. The weight of it is 350 kg. The palm leaves are about 2 meters wide. They are united into a mighty stem which means purposefulness and unity of our region.

The stem extending into the land symbolizes the source of wealth and prosperity of our land. The crown above the shield is curved upwards according to the Slavic heraldic laws. The symbol of riches and greatness are the golden oak branches decorated with azure ribbons. They are the distinguishing features of the regional coat of arms.

Aim 2: Reading + Speaking (Role-Play "At the lesson")

1. Presenting Aim

T: When speaking to different people you should be able to keep talking, to ask and answer the questions. Your home task was to get acquainted with the text "The Donetsk Region" and be ready for retelling.


    The Donetsk region lies in the steppe zone of south-western Ukraine. The region includes 28 cities of regional and 23 - of district subordination, 18 agricultural districts, 133 settlements, and 1,126 villages. Its territory homes more than 5,200,000 people. The region has a well-equipped and developed system of transportation, in the first respect, the largest Donetsk railway, which carries two fifth of the state's freight.

The sea-gate of the Donetsk region is the largest sea-port of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov, which in turn has a connection to the Black Sea. The beneficial geographical position and the developed transport network contribute to the region's becoming an important link between Ukraine and the states of Europe and Asia.

    The Donetsk region is a rich and abundant land. Ancient Choomak paths ran across its southern borders. And during the previous century with its rapid industrial growth, grey feather-grass steppes were awakened by the rattle of the railway, which joined Kursk and Kharkiv with Donbas and the Azov sea ports. By the end of the 19th century with its rapid industrial revolution, rich deposits of coal, iron ore created favourable

conditions in the region for the development of industrial base and for intensive industrial investments. Needless to say how important the Donbas underground depositories are for the economy of our young developing state. Its rich depths contain almost all the components of the Mendeleev periodic table. Recently great ferrous-ore deposits have been discovered not far from Mariupol.

    The labour of many generations of Donbas created a powerful base having a personnel of experienced workers, specialists, managers. The core of the region's economy is the highly developed heavy industry, coal mining, metallurgy, and engineering in the first respect. The multi-structural character of rural economy is a real and undeniable fact. People are free to choose the mode of management themselves. The main goal of this choice is to create landowners, real masters of land.

    The powerful personnel and intellectual potential, modern scientific and research base alongside with the developed industry on the path of market reorganization, create necessary conditions for revival and development of the Donbas economy: foreign investments, safe business, close beneficial cooperation with home and foreign business partners in all spheres.

Donetsk Region

    The Donetsk Region is the easternmost region of southern Ukraine. Its southern part is washed by the Sea of Azov. Its total area is 26 500 square kilometers. The population of the region is 5 000 900. It is divided into 18 regions and 48 cities. Donetsk is the region's capital.

    The Donetsk Region consists of an undulating plain dissected by river valleys, ravines, and gullies. The southeastern part consists of the Donets Ridge (up to 350 m. in elevation). In the northwest the ridge meets the Dnieper Lowland; in the west, the Zaporizhia Ridge; and in the south, the Azov Upland (elevation 300 m), which slopes southward and changes into the Azov Lowland. The largest river of the region is the Donets, with its tributaries the Kazennyi Torets, the Bakhmutka, and the Luhanka.

    The region lies in the steppe belt. Forests and thickers cover 5 per cent of the territory. The region is rich in mineral resources, such as bituminous coal, rock salt, clay, mercury and others. The climate is temperate-continental, with hot summers and cold winters. Ukrainians constitute more than 50 per cent of the population of the region.

    The Donetsk Region is one of the most developed industrial regions of Ukraine. It contains the principal mining and metallurgical complex of Ukraine. It is a large producer of energy and has strong chemical, construction, light-manufacturing, and food industries. The region ranks first in Ukraine in coal extraction. There are about 120 mines there. Agriculture mostly specializes in meat- and dairy-cattle raising.

    On the banks of the Donets a lot of famous people were born. They are: the poet V. Sosiura, the writer, actor and film-director L. Bykov, the artist Kuindzhi, the singer A. Solovianenko, the composer S. Prokofiev, the cosmonaut L. Kyzym and literary critic I. Dziuba.


    Donetsk is a large industrial, scientific and cultural city of Ukraine. It is the centre of coal-mining industry. It is also the main fuel base of Ukraine.

    It was founded in 1869. Until 1924 it was called Uzovka. From 1924 to 1961 it was called Stalino, and only in 1961 it became Donetsk.

    The city is situated on the river Kalmius. It is very famous for its waste banks. Now the city produces metallurgic and mining equipment, refrigerators, and bicycles. Food and light industries are also well-developed in Donetsk. Donetsk houses five higher educational institutions. Among them there is a well-known Donetsk Medical Institute and Donetsk Polytechnical Institute that train highly-qualified specialists. There are 3 theatres and two museums in the city: Donetsk Opera and Ballet House, Donetsk Museum of Fine Arts are among them.

T: You see Donbas is one of the biggest industrial, scientific and cultural centres of Ukraine. Our people are very friendly and hospitable. They are always glad to meet guests. As for me, if I invited guests I would ask them to come to my living-place. The members of my family would cook traditional meals like varenyky and holubtsy. It would be a good way of getting together with friends. And I'm sure that if I invited guests to my home they would be pleased.

2.    Presenting Grammar and Making Notes in Scheme.

So, your task is to answer the question "What would you do if you were the Governor of the Donetsk Region and why?" We should display our ideas with the help of "A Decisions Tree"

1.    Presenting

T: And now it's high time to present our project work.

P1: Our region is so beautiful; the people are so generous, good-natured, hospitable and talented. Speaking about our region we can't forget that it has its own wonders. We must only want to notice them.

P2: One of these wonders is our native town, where we were born, grew up and live. Just from this town we enter the world which is called Life. It is the dearest place for us and we always want to come back here.

P3: Kramatorsk is the third biggest town in the north of the Donetsk Region. It is situated on the banks of the River Kazennyi Torets. It is the main centre of machine building industry an important railway station of our region.

P4: Kramatorsk enterprises product all sorts of goods, which are needful in Ukraine and other countries. Kramatorsk workers make the best machines and equipment which are up to world standards.

PS: We consider that Kramatorsk is a town of rest for our hearts and amusement for our souls. And we'd like to represent our town in a short video film.

??    Sounding Film

P1: Kramatorsk holds a special place in our hearts. It begins here, at the entry memorial stele which represents the land of our natural riches, giant industrial enterprises and the greatness of our citizens.

P2: In the Square of Eternal Glory you can see a memorial to the soldiers who defended our Homeland in the heroic struggle against the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War.

P3: Kramatorsk has a bright sunny face and a happy and industrious character. Our eyes take note of progress in the economic, scientific and cultural fields and in improving living standards. Kramatorsk is so austere in the day-time and so enticing when garlanded in the evening lights.

P4: Now we are in the centre of our town. It is the square round the Lenin Monument. Here the ringing voices of children and the twitter of birds fill the air all day long. You can see the Palace of Culture and the building of the Town Soviet.

P5: You'll receive a great satisfaction having visited the greatest park "Jubilant". Here you can ride a car, chase one another about in dodgems or have fun on the swings. You can seat on the benches and enjoy nature. A lot of young people come to disco and meet their friends in the evenings.

P6: You can watch the motor-cycle races, the most exciting event during the City Day Celebrating. The sportsmen of Ukraine, Russia, Moldova and Belarus usually come to our town to take part in these competitions. They are always held in the Kutovaya Gully and attract lots of spectators.

P7: And our next destination is a very important place in our town. It is our machine-building plant NKMZ, The production of this plant was presented at many exhibitions in our country and abroad and it was highly appreciated. It is an industrial heart of Kramatorsk. The workers and the citizens of Kramatorsk are proud of NKMZ.

P8: The transport system of our town is quite developed. One of the most important railways of Ukraine goes through our territory. It joins Kharkiv with Donbas the Azov sea ports, Russia and Caucasus.

P9: The evening on the central square during the City Day Celebrations festive occasion. Music, laughter, joy and gaiety are important ingredients of the celebrations. Witty jokes, merry songs and fabulous fireworks fill the air at the rollicking celebration. At this moment you fill in love with Kramatorsk wholeheartedly and forever.

??     Conclusion

P: At last we want to appeal to our native town: We don't know, our dear Kramatorsk, how much time we spend with you, what fair wind will bring us somewhere... But we know for sure we'll return to you again and again.

    T: Good for you! As for me, I think that the real pearl of our region is our Sviatohorsk. Today it attracts thousands of tourists and is known throughout Ukraine. Look over there, please! You can see a picture created by our pupils. I hope you agree with me that the Monastery fits in well with the beauty of the Ukrainian nature. It's a part of the picturesque landscape with its elegance and majesty. I consider Sviatohorsk is a real wonder of our region.

Kuzum and others were born and live here. Thanks to them, we feel like living, creating, dreaming and becoming better. With legitimate pride for our school, we should say that it was a cradle for Leonid Bukov and Joseph Kobzon, our former pupils and great sons of our glorious land.

And to finish our lesson we'd like to sing one of the most favourite Kobzon's songs "Where Your Homeland Begin For You". We love our Motherland greatly and we'd like to share our love with you.
