The Fifth Form

Theme: « Parties and Holidays »

Objectives:

●  to practice pupils’ listening and speaking skills;

●  to enrich the pupils’ vocabulary;

●  to train the usage of the lexical material in practice;

●  to widen students’ knowledge about the celebration of different

parties and holidays in Ukraine and English-speaking countries;

●  to develop their critical thinking;

●  to enrich their outlook;

●  to teach pupils not only to respect their native customs and

traditions of people in English-speaking countries.

Equipments: the blackboard, the motto of the lesson, «Name badges»,

«Place markers», «Christmas Tree», «Valentine Tree», «Easter Tree», «New

Year’s Tree», «Halloween Tree»,  a doll, greeting cards, invitations,

«The Tree of Associations», tests, song «Happy Birthday», song «Happy

st. Valentine’s Day», balloons, pictures, wall-newspapers.

The Motto: «Seeing Is Believing»

T:  Dear friends!

    Today we are having a summary lesson devoted to parties and

holidays. You have already read many texts in your books, had a lot of

additional information about parties and holidays.

3. And now make up short dialogues about parties and holidays.

Dialogues

P1: Do children of your class like to have parties?

P2: Of course, they do. They write invitations for their quests. And

they also prepare many interesting things for the party: they blow up

balloons, make presents, there are many games, surprises and shows. And

what about you?  What parties do you like best of all?

P1: I like birthday parties best of all. At a birthday party there is

always a cake on the table with candles. If you want to know how old the

child is you should count the candles.

P1: What parties do they celebrate in Great Britain?

P2: They celebrate Halloween parties, Christmas parties, balloon

parties, teddy bear birthday parties, football birthday parties and

others.

P1: What do they make for these parties?

P2: For this sort of theme parties children make a lot of things: fancy

dress, party masks, party hats, place markers, name badges, invitations,

cakes and posters.

P2: Of course, I did.

P2: I usually write these:

P1: What holidays do they celebrate in Britain in winter?

P2: They celebrate Christmas, New Year’s Day and St. Valentines Day?

P1: How do English people celebrate New Year’s Day?

P2: On December the thirty-first people usually visit their friends.

There is a lot of dancing and eating. In Scotland people bring a piece

of coal for good luck in the New Year. And how do Ukrainian people

celebrate New Year’s Day?

P1: Ukrainian people celebrate New Year’s Day with New Year’s Tree,

Father Frost, New Year’s Parties and presents.

P1: When and how do they celebrate Christmas in Britain?

P2: They celebrate Christmas on the twenty-fifth of December in Britain.

They celebrate in with Christmas Tree, Christmas presents in the

stockings, Santa Claus and the traditional Christmas meal roast turkey

and Christmas pudding and Christmas decoration in the streets.

      And when and how do they celebrate Christmas in Ukraine?

P1: They celebrate Christmas on the seventh of January in Ukraine.

Ukrainian celebrate Christmas with Christmas tree Didukh, traditional

Ukrainian Christmas dish kutya, caroling, vertep and with the « Holy

Supper » on Christmas Eve ( a meal of 12 ritual meatless and milkless

dishes ). Nowadays Ukrainian people still like to go to church and

listen to Christmas sermons.

P1: Is Valentine’s Day popular in your village?

P2: Yes, it is. Valentine’s Day is very popular in my village,

especially at our school.

P1: What do you usually do on St. Valentine’s Day?

P2: We usually buy or make Valentine cards and Valentine trees and send

them to people we love.

                                                       VII dialogue

P1: When is Halloween?

P2: Halloween is on the 31- st of October.

P1: What do children usually do at this time?

P2: Children is English – speaking countries go «trick – or – treating».

They dress up as ghosts, witches, devils. Then they visit their

neighbours’ houses. They ask: «Trick or treat?» The neighbour has to

give them a treat ( usually chocolate )…or they play a trick on the

neighbour (for example, they throw water into the house! Pumpkins with

candles inside are usual decoration in the windows of people houses.

What became the symbol of this celebration?

P1: Apples are associated with Halloween. Some people believe that, if

you slice an apple through the equator and then eat it by candlelight a

mirror, your future spouse will appear over your shoulder.

                                                       VIII dialogue

P1: What holiday shall we celebrate Easter on the fourth of April this

year. We shall celebrate it with the Easter matins and high mass, the

pasky ( traditional Easter breads ) and pysanky. And how do they

celebrate Easter in Great Britain?

P2: At Easter children eat chocolate Easter eggs. Sometimes parents hide

them in the house or in the garden and the children look for them. The

eggs are either hollow or have a filling, and are usually covered with

brightly colored silver paper. Easter is the time for holidays,

festivals and time for giving chocolate Easter eggs, the day of parties,

and above all a celebration that Jesus Christ raised from the dead and

lives forever. Easter Bunny is a symbol of  Easter in Britain.

4. Speaking

T: What holiday do English people celebrate on the first of March?

P1: English people celebrate St. David’s Day on the first of March. St.

David Day a special celebration for St. David, the patron saint of

Wales. On this day many patriotic Welshmen wear a leek or a daffodils in

their buttonholes as a celebration.

T: And what do you know about Presidents Day?

P1: Presidents Day is observed on the third Monday in February. It’s

devoted to George Washington who is the «Father of the Nation», «first

in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of the country men». Cherry

pie and cherry candles are served on this day. But this day is not a

national holiday.

T: And now let’s play the role-play about favourite holidays …, imagine

you are correspondent of the magazine « Piznaiko ». You ask people about

their favourite holidays. You stop people in the street to ask them a

few questions. You are passer – byes. You are being stopped in the

street by an interviewer. Answer her questions.

Begin by saying:

-       Excuse me, I’m doing a survey about favourite holidays. Can I

ask you a few questions?

A correspondent of the magazine « Piznaiko »

    -    Excuse me, I’m doing a survey on favourite holidays.

    -    Hi!

    -    Can I ask me a few questions?

    -    What is your name?

    -    What is your favourite holiday?

    -    Thank you.

P1: I prefer Mother’s Day. But I don’t celebrate Mother’s Day in our

family because my mother doesn’t live with me. She lives in Poland with

my younger brothers Dominic and Christian and my younger sister Clavdia

and her husband Yuzek. I haven’t seen her for seven years already. I

miss my Mum and my sister and brothers so much. And I dream that one day

she will come back to Ukraine and I shall hug her and say:

              « My dear, dear Mummy

                 Let me kiss your face

                 I want you to be happy

                 Today and always ».

P2: I prefer Easter. Easter is a feast of joy and gladness that unites

the entire community in common celebration. We go to Easter matins and

high mass during which the party and pysanky (decorated coloured Easter

eggs) are blessed in church. After the matins we exchange Easter

greetings, give each other pysanky and then hurry home with our baskets

of blessed food.

P3: Thanksgiving is a happy holiday on the fourth Thursday of each

November. American of all religions celebrate the holiday with big

dinners and family reunions. It is a time to remember all the good

things and family reunions. It is a time to remember all the good things

in life and to be thankful. Turkey is a traditional Thanksgiving Day

Food. It is served with sweet potatoes, squash, cranberry sauce, and

pumpking pie. Apple cider is the drink of the day.

     Stores and homes are decorated with wreaths of dried flowers,

vegetables and horns of plenty.

     Charitable organizations serve dinners to needy people, they send

baskets of food to the elderly and sick.

P4:  My favourite festival is Christmas. It’s on important time for me

because all the family are together. We have a large « Holy Supper »

with twelve ritual meatless and milkless dishes: kutya, dumplings, fish,

stewed fruit, plums with beans and some other dishes.

      Christmas is the holiday of joy. We like to have fun on this day,

we go from door to door, sing carols and people give sweets, apples and

money to us. We also like to go to church and listen to Christmas

sermons.

our imagination.

P4: Naturally, the celebration of parties and holidays is exciting,

because it means fun, joy and adventure, and adventure is necessary.

P5: That’s right. When we celebrate different parties and holidays, we

dance and play games and organize contests, so it gives us movement and

keeps us from growing stale and old.

P6: I want to add that the celebration of different parties and holidays

gives us knowledge.

P7: I share your opinion and want to add that the celebration of parties

and holidays helps us to study foreign language.

P8: In my opinion the celebration of different parties and holidays is

great and exciting. You can learn and see a lot of interesting things.

When I celebrate different parties and holidays, I always try to take

pictures of them to enrich my album.
