"It's not who you are but what you do"

Objectives: to revise and enrich student's vocabulary on the topic;

          to practise reading for gist and then for more intensive understanding;

to improve learners' skills of listening and comprehension;

to provide opportunities for developing learners' speaking and writing

skills ( group work, free discussion);

to present students' projects;

to broaden students knowledge of the topic.

Type of lesson: Task Based Learning

PROCEDURE I.INTRODUCTION

(Greeting, presenting of the topic)

II. VOCABULARY

a) words definitions;

T: Let's remind the meanings of the words we’ll use at the lesson. Give definition to the word:

  1.  OCCUPATION - (any kind of employment).
  2.  PROFESSION - (an occupation that requires special education or training).
  3.  TRADE - (an occupation connected with manual and mechanical labour and the

use of machinery or tools)

  1.  JOB - (the regular paid work that you do for an employer).
  2.  CAREER - (the work you do or plan to do for most of your life).

b) matching (group work);

T: Split into two groups "Professions " and "Trades ".

Find the words of your group and match them with their definitions.

 

1. Teacher

a) someone whose job is to give medical treatment;

2. Tailor

b) someone whose job is to design or build walls, buildings, etc. with bricks;

3. Accountant

c) someone whose job is to cut, wash and arrange people's hair in particular styles;

4. Bricklayer

d) someone whose job is to teach, especially in a school;

e) someone whose job is to connect or repair electrical wires or equipment;

f) someone whose job is to keep and check financial

i) someone whose job is to make shoes and boots;

j) someone whose job is making and repairing wooden objects;

11. Programmer

k) someone whose job is to design or build roads, bridges, machines, etc.

12. Shoemaker

1) someone whose job is to write computer programmes.

c) add 4 more words to each group (textbook ех.5.р.150; ех.4,р.163). (KEYS: - architect, judge, surgeon, journalist;

T: Each group, discuss your opinions and report to the class according to the following plan:

V.READING (pair work)

T: Read the letter quickly. Answer the questions.

Dear Sir or Madam

  1.  I am writing to apply for the kitchen helper at Lenny's Restaurant which was advertised in last Saturday's newspaper.
  2.  I have considerable experience of working in catering. Last summer I worked for six weeks as a waitress in my local cafe. My responsibilities there included taking orders and serving customers as well as cleaning the kitchen and washing up.
  3.  I consider myself to be reliable, hard-working and enthusiastic. If necessary, I can supply references from the cafe owner and also from a teacher at my school.
  4.  I would be very grateful for the opportunity to visit the restaurant and discuss my application with you in person. I am available for interview any day after school or on Saturdays. If my application is successful, I will be available to start work on 25 July after my exams.

I'd like to become a court reporter by 2018 because this job will be well paid. Median salary will be 49,710 $. It will be rather prestigious in future. Growth rate will be 1_8 %. Besides I'll help people to solve their problems.

Fill in RESUME form.

Consult "Resume Guide Explanation ". Remember: the resume gives the first impression of the applicant to the employer. It should be neat and well organized.

It is usually a good idea to attach the resume to the letter of application. At home you should study the sample application letter and write the letter yourself.
