Topic of the lesson: "The Professions We Choose".


- practical: to develop listening, reading and speaking

skills on the material covered;

- educative and developing:     to train the new words and expressions

according to the topic of the lesson; to develop students skills in giving opinions, agreeing and disagreeing;

- bringing - up: to analyze why profession is important for

students and whether they are ready to adult life.

Type of the lesson: combined

Equipment: a tape recorder, recordings of jokes, some

cards with the names of different kinds of job, tables, a quotation on the board, psychological test "A map of interests".


I. Presentation of the topic.

T.:       "It is not who you are, but what you do." These words are closely connected with your topic "The Professions we choose". There is great variety of professions. Some of them may seem to be interesting to you, some of them boring. You would like to do some of the jobs, others seem to be not very attractive. But all of them are important. We can't do without any of them. So it is not who you are, but what you do. Do you agree?

Students share their ideas.

II. Warming up.

T.: As we are going to speak about professions today and during our next lesions I'd likе to draw your attention tо the quotation on the board. "Here it is. He works best who knows his trade" ("Дело мастера боиться"). What do you think of it? What do this lines mean?

PI. To my mind that's quite right My future profession is welding. I apply for a new job at Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol. Now I study at the vocational school and I hope that I will be a good worker.

P2. I am sure that-people must work and they oughtn't be idle-because people's hands create all material things and objects that surround us. I think we are the future of our country.

P3. I'm a student of Mariupol Higher Metallurgical Professional School. I'm proud of it Soon I shall be a worker of our Works. I'm going to be a welder. And I'll try to work as well as may be. I think our future is in our hands.

T.: A well - done job! I highly appreciate all your  ideas. They are really full of deep understanding why people oughtn't to be idle and why they should work doing their utmost to improve the living conditions in our country.

III. Revising the Vocabulary.

T.: Let's define these professions. Look at the table N1.

IV. Pair work. The game "What is the Profession?"

T.: Now let us divide info the pairs. I give you the cards, where the names of different kinds of job are written. One student оf the pair comes to the table,takes the card, imagines that it's his job. The task of other students is to guess the profession, asking questions. The student who guesses, has the right to take a card.

V. Reading.

T.: Yesterday I read an article about your future profession a welder. And now let's repeat all the necessary terms according to your profession. Look at the table N2.

Welding is a process when metal parts (1) together by the

application of heat, pressure, or a combination of both. The processes of welding can
(2) into two main groups

рressure welding, when the weld is achieved by pressure and

heat welding, when the weld is achieved by heat. Heat welding is most
common welding process used today.

Nowdays welding (3)      ~   -  instead: of bolting and riveting in the construction of many types of structures, including bridges, buildings and ships. It (4) ____________ also a basic process in the motor and aircraft industries. It is necessary, almost in all productions where metals are used.

The welding process (5) greatly on the properties of the metals, the

purpose of their application and available equipment. Welding processes are classified according to the sources of heat and pressure used.

welding, and resistance welding. Other joining processes (7) laser  welding and electron-beam welding.

3. Post-reading activities. Pair work.

After finishing the work some of the students read their variants aloud. Students compare their stories and discuss possible variants.

VI. Listening comprehension.

T.: And now let's relax - listen to some jokes and comment on them. Pay attention to some words and expressions on the board.

T.: Has the office benefited from the charwoman's zeal?

2. A Doctor told his patient that there was nothing really the matter with him: "All

doctor", - answered the patient.

T.: What do you think of that doctor?

VII. Psychological Test "A map of interests".

T.: I know you have already chosen your profession. You will be welders. But may be it will be a mistake. Let's think. I suggest you to do psychological test. Your task is to answer the questions by writing "Yes" or "No" next to each of them.


Then write out the numbers of your "Yes" answers and look in the Key to find out what profession you are cut out for. Let's do it. I wish you a good luck.

  6.  Can you say that your first impulse when you see somebody hurt is to give first

  8.  Do you like to observe peopled behaviour?
  9.  Would you like to find out about the history of your family, the street you live
    in, your city, etc?

11. Are you fond of singing, reciting poetry, dancing, etc. in front of the audience? 12. Do you enjoy spending time with kids, reading them books, playing with them,

helping them, etc?

13. Are you irritated when your sick relatives ask you to help them?

14. Do you soon get tired when you work with dictionaries or reference books?

15. Can you quickly switch from one job to another?

16. Do you like to make reports on history?

17. Do your hobbies include playing musical instruments, drawing or wood


18. Have you ever wanted to give a class instead of tour teacher?

19. Are you interested in people's anatomy?

20. Do you like to discuss books with your friend?

21. Do you like to analyse the events that have happened in your or your friends'

and relatives' lives?

22. Are you interested in your country's past?

23. Do you enjoy reading about the history of arts?

24. Can you say that you find more positive than negative sides in the work of a


25. Have you ever wanted to work as a nurse during your summer holidays? 26. Are you interested in word origin?

27. Do you keep a diary?

28. Are you interested in the past of other countries?

29. Do you like to watch one and the same film or play several times?

30. Have you ever tried to teach your younger brothers (sisters, cousins, etc)?


1. If you positively answered questions № 1, 7,19, and 25 negatively № 13 - we would recommend you to think of choosing a medical profession.

  1.  If you have written out № 2, 8, 14, 20, 26 - your special field is literature and
  2.  If you have marked 9, 19, 21, 27 - your vocation is journalism.
  3.  If you have chosen 4, 10, 16, 22, 28 — you are mostly interested in history.
  4.  If your answers include 5, 11, 17, 23, 29 - you'd better choose arts as your
    future profession.
  5.  If your choice is 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 - you are a born teacher and you'll
    regret it all your life if you don't follow your vocation.

VIII. Writing. Group work.

T.: Now let us make a list of sources where we can get information about jobs. Pupils work in two teams; they come to the blackboard in turns and write their ideas in two  columns.

Possible answers:

books, teachers, parents, excursions to the plant, from so called Open Day at Universities, TV, cinema, grandparents, friends, next door man, newspapers, aids, magazines, radio programmes, Internet-sites, leaflets, societies and circles, from our own experience.

IX. Home assignment.

T.: Well, we are coming to the end of our lesson and it's high time to make some conclusions. But before it I'd like you to write down your home task: you have to write a small composition "What are you going to be".

X. Summarising.

T.: Well, I see that you are ready to adult life and our lessons haven't been in vain. What have you done today?

Was it interesting and useful to speak about professions? What activity did you like best?

Students give their answers.
