Protection of nature

by Tamara Surnina

School 11,  Smila, Cherkassy region.

  •  to extend students’ knowledge about ecological problems;
  •  to develop students’ creative imagination in communicative activity;
  •  to improve listening comprehension and oral speech skills;
  •  to stimulate students’ thinking.

Equipment: cards for vocabulary work, pictures, posters, the video-film, songs.

I.  Starting point greeting.

Today we’ll speak about nature. We’ll go deeper into the environmental problems.

II. Warm-up activity.

  T. Are you romantic persons?

      Have you got imagination?

      (Listen to music and enjoy!)

  T. Where were you several minutes ago?

(in the forest, near the sea...)

  T. Read the poem by W.H. Davies.

What is the life, if full of care,

We’ve no time to stand and stare.

No time to see when wood we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see in broad daylight

Streams full of stars like skies at night.

A poor life this is, if full of care,

We’ve no time to stand and stare.

  T. What is our life without nature?

2 Many prominent people wrote about our planet and it’s protection.

     What quotations do you know?

      What is your favourite?

  •  The world is a fine place and worth fighting for. (Ernest Hemingway).
  •  Our planet is showing us the red warning light – to be careful!

To take care of the planet is to take care of your own house. (The Dalai Lama).

  •  Look after your planet, its only one we have. (Prince Philip of Britain).

The words by Hemingway will be the motto of our lessons.

III. T. We live surrounded by wonderful nature. (The film “Our Earth”).

What role does nature play in our life?

        Pupils nswers:

        Nature supplies us with...

        Nature gives us...

        Nature presents us with...

     T. But today we have a burning problem. It’s ecology.

By the way, what does the word “ecology” mean?

     P. As for as I know the word ”ecology” came from Greek word which means “home”.

This idea of “home” includes the whole planet of ours.

IV. Vocabulary

  1.  Word list

Environment, ecology, pollution, living things, to release, harmful substances, toxic wastes, to contaminate, etc.

  1.  Read the meaning and guess the word:
  •  The scientific study of the natural relations of plants, animals, people to each other and their surroundings.
  •  The act of making (air, water, land) dangerously impure.
  •  Too many people in one place.
  •  The act of destroying, putting an end to the existence of something.
  •  The act of throwing  things away untidily.
  •  Plants, animals, people.

(littering, pollution, overcrowding, ecology, living things, destruction).

V. T. Now our “home” – our planet is in danger. Now you should answer two main questions:

       Is the situation really dangerous?

What can we do to protect the nature and to save our planet?

          (Pupils’ answers)

P1. I want to tell you about water pollution. The situation is really gloomy and sometimes even hopeless. Rivers, lakes, seas, oceans cover more then 70% of our planet. Scientists say “man will die if oceans die”. Over 5 million tons of oil products pollute the ocean each year. About 2 million tons of these products come from cars. First the oil products go into atmosphere. From the atmosphere they go into oceans. Experts believe life in oceans will be destroyed within 25 years.

P2.  Well, we see that water which is necessary for our life is polluted awfully. As for me, I want to focus to another problem – the problem of air pollution. Nobody and nothing on the Earth could live without air. People pollute the air all over the world. A great number of trees growing on the planet produce oxygen and clean the air. But vast forests are cut and burn in fire. Their disappearance upset the oxygen balance.

P3. We must keep in mind that not only the industry pollutes the nature. Every year each family create one ton of rubbish. A great number of dumps are all over the country. Just only some facts: it takes more than 2 years to decompose paper. Cans and tins destroy more than 90 years. Plastic packets decompose more than 200 years, glass – more than 1000 years.

VI. There are many international organizations which are trying to stop the destroying of the nature.

Listen to the record. You should answer the following questions:

  •  What is the name of organization?
  •  What is its aim?
  •  Where does it get many from?

Every ten minutes, one kind of animal, plant or insect disappears. If nothing is done about it, over one million species will disappear in twenty years from nov.

The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste. The Mediterranean is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following. If nothing is done about it, one day nothing will be able to live in the seas.

The tropical rain forests, which are the home of half the Earth’s living things, are being destroyed. If nothing is done about it, they will disappear in twenty years.

Fortunately, there are peple who are trying to do something about it. In 1961, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was founded – a small group of people who wanted to raise money to save animals and plants. Today, the World Wildlife Fund is a large international organization. It has raised over ₤ 35 million for conservation projects, and has created or given support to National Parks in five continents. It has helped 30 mammals and birds to survive. Perhaps this is not much, but it is a start. If more people give more money – if more governments think of what is happening, perhaps the World Wildlife Fund will be able to help us to protect the natural world and all of us with it.

VII. T. We know that people like to spend their free time fishing, gathering berries, having picnics and lighting barbecues. Unfortunately, they leave a lot of different litter in their campsites.

                                            (Photos of the countryside)

     P 1, 2, 3...    1) The water is polluted.

                            2) Dogs are not under control.

                            3) The trees are cut.

                            4) Fires are burnt.

                            5) Litter is left.

                            6) Bottles, cans, tines are left everywhere.

                            7) Papers and plastic packets are thrown out.

     T. And what about you? Do you behave yourselves in the countryside the same way?

P 1, 2, 3...  – We never break trees when we go to the forest.

                           – We  always take litter home after a picnic.

             – We never throw rubbish into the water.

             – I never out wild flowers.

             – We always leave the place clean when we hike.

             – We save energy and water at home.

             – We reuse plastic containers.

     T. Now, pupils, let’s make up the Code of Ecological Rules for all pupils of our school.

Write down them on the board.

                                          Code of Ecological Rules

       -    Don’t break trees.

       -    Don’t leave litter.

       -    Keep dogs under control.

       -    Put litter away.

       -    Keep your place tidy.

       -    Grow trees and flowers.

       -    Don’t cut wild flowers.

       -    Don’t burn fires.

VIII.  Our lesson is coming to an end. In conclusion we’ll sing the song “Imagine”. An outstanding English writer John Galsworthy said: “If you don’t think about the future, you will not have it”. Let’s think about the future. Let’s keep our planet tidy and make it better place to live in. Let’s save the Earth for ourselves and for the next generations.

IX. Summing-up.
