Subject: Biography and literary works of Jack London 

 Objectives:

  1.  given the information about Jack London in the form of old newspapers pupils would be able to improve their reading skills of literature vocabulary;
  2.  after reading the information about Jack London pupils will be able to discuss Jack London’s private life, adventures and journeys, literary career and his death;
  3.  after discussing the information about Jack London pupils will be able to generalize Jack London’s life events and the information about his literary works.
  4.  given the opportunity to watch video pupils will be able to recognize the sentences they were given before with the video
  5.  after watching the video about Jack London pupils will be able to differentiate the true and false information about the writer measured by the sentences they were given;
  6.  after receiving the whole information about Jack London pupils will be able to deduce the life and literary career of the writer, speaking 30 sentences at least.
  7.  to promote pupils interest in American literature;

  1.  The beginning of the lesson:

  1.  Greetings;

T. Good morning, pupils. Hope you are fine today and ready for work. The theme of our lesson is the Biography and literary works of Jack London.

And our task is to work together prolifically and successfully to learn as much information concerning Jack London as we can. And I would be very happy if by the end of your lesson you can remember:

  •  The information about Jack London’s private life, adventures and journeys and literary career.

  1.  Warm-up (Speaking);

T. Jack London is one of my favourite writers, and I hope, I can share my affection for his works with you and that you’ll like him too.

So, you can see one of his quotes which is a reality nowadays for many people especially in Ukraine.

“White Fang knew  the  law well: to oppress the weak and obey the strong.”

  •  Is it your style of behaving? Is it right to oppress the weak people and obey the strong? Have you ever had such a situation in your school, when you had to obey the authorities but you didn’t want to do it?

  1.  Presentation (reading silently, while-reading activity – writing out).  

Around the room – you can see many extracts from old newspapers of Jack London’s time, there are also many photos of Jack London and his family. All this material is full of information about the life and adventures of Jack London. I tried to create a museum-library atmosphere in our lesson. And now I would ask you to work like scientists from Ukraine who were studying the biography of Jack London in different libraries of the USA. There are three points on which you have to speak later, so two persons from each group have to speak on one point.

Before you start your researches I have to divide you in two teams- two scientific groups.

Your task is the following: each member of your group has to read one newspaper and gather as much information from his newspaper about Jack London as possible. You can write out some useful information and use it in your presentation later.

I suggest you to listen to one Hawaiian song ‘Aloha `Oe’ as background, while you’re researching. Jack London wrote his short story with the same name ‘Aloha `Oe’, after visiting Hawaii.

At the end of the song you have to finish your researches.

T. Your task now is to share with your group the information you’ve read. You are to discuss it between the members of your group. During your discussion you have to divide the whole information you read into the following points:

1) Short presentation of your group.

Jack London’s private life (birth, parents, wives, children)hobbies, adventures, journeys;

2) Literary career, works.

3) Jack London’s death (where, when, causes, burial, grave).

Choose between yourselves who will speak later on these points. Two persons from each group have to speak on one point. So, three points and six persons from each group will give us the complete presentation of Jack London’s life and career.

I suggest you again to listen to one Hawaiian song ‘Aloha `Oe’ as background, while you’re discussing. At the end of the song you have to finish your discussions.

T. I am going to hand you out the cards with the sentences which are mixed. You are to work in pairs, and your task is to arrange these sentences in right order to build the text. You have 3 minutes.

Well, Jack London wrote a lot of books, he wrote about fifty books in sixteen years. But he’s been remembered largely as the author of dog stories, and he did write some good dog stories, he wrote The Call of the Wild, about Buck.

And then he wrote another one called White Fang and their companion pieces. But he wrote a lot about politics.

He wrote about war, revolution. He wrote a book called the Iron Heel – it was published in 1908 – that was about coming of a dictatorship in the United States. It’s about the Civil War, that  takes place, and it’s a futuristic novel.

And he published a collection of essays called War of the Classes about how there are social economic classes in the United States. And he wrote a collection of essays called Revolution.

So, for twenty years he was a member of the Socialist party of the United States and spoke on behalf and wrote on behalf of the socialist party. Most of that part of Jack London which is a central part of who he was and what he did has been ignored, neglected, omitted from literature and the historical records.

So, I wanted to salvage it, resurrect it and bring it to people’s attention.

So, that’s why I did The Radical Jack London which is a collection of little known of his writings with a long essay by me about him: and where he came from, and how he became political and the evolution and development of his politics.

So, I think Jack London is a very fascinating guy because he was complex; he did a lot of things. And he is a pivotal American writer. He started to write at the end of the 19th century and he read all the books that we now recognized as classics and the books by Herman Melville, and James Fennimore Cooper, and Mark Twain, and Edgar Allan Poe.

And he loved all of them and he wanted to continue the things that they were doing: sea stories, and ghost stories, and Huckleberry Finn like works.

And he did: some of his early works were imitation of those writers. So, he kind of put a cap stone to so much of American culture of the 19th century but then he also initiated a lot of what would happen in the twentieth century.

He wrote The Iron Heel, which I mentioned. He also was a surfer, and he was a boxer. He wrote about bullfighting and all those kinds of things Hemingway would later do.

He wrote a book called The Road about his experiences as a hobo travelling around the United States that inspired Jack Kerouac to write his book On the Road about his experiences. So, he is the father of the ‘Beats’. (the Beat Generation)

In the 60s, there was a student radical organization called Students for Democratic Society SDS and Jack London and Upton Sinclair created the grandfather organization of SDS it was called The Intercollegiate Socialist Society in 1906. 

And Jack went around talking on college campuses to students and urging them to read socialist books, to become politically active.

So, I would say in the 60s, we’d say, he has to be relevant.

And I think that Jack London is still relevant today and worth reading. Right now I’m rereading one of his novels that’s called The Valley of the Moon.

It’s a great love story and it’s a love story that’s set against the backdrop of strikes and clashes between the workers and the militia that’s called in.

And it’s really, really well done. It’s an excellent book. If people want to read one Jack London book this year I would say read the Valley of the Moon, it’s so alive.
