Хід уроку

  1.  Привітання.

Good morning, boys and girls!

I hope you are ready to work hard and enthusiastically. Be calm and confident on your way to knowledge.

  1.  Повідомлення теми уроку.

We continue to study the topic “Environmental problems” and the subject matter of today’s lesson is “Our Fragile Planet Asks for Help”.

Look at the apple! Imagine it’s our Earth. I’m cutting the apple into 4 pieces. Three quarters of the Earth is water and only ¼ is land. One half of it is habitable. The rest of the land is the mountains, deserts, ice and other places where people cannot live in. And now I’m cutting this half into 4 parts. It’s impossible to believe but only 1/4 gives us food and shelter. And people destroy this small piece, though we are the part of  it. The nature, the Earth  need our understanding and help but not destruction.  So, we try to discuss all these problems today.

  1.  Визначення цілей для учнів.

5. Основна частина уроку.

I suggest you a quotation  for today’s discussion:

“When the last tree is cut down and the last river poisoned,

then you will see that you cannot  eat  money”

It’s a Greenpeace message.

Let’s  organize  a serious  ecological conference to discuss some ecological problems and  to define if the quotation  is true or not.

Look at the plan of  the  discussion:

  1.  Global problems
  2.  Sources of  pollution
  3.  Air pollution
  4.  Water pollution
  5.  Ecological problems of our town
  6.  TV-bridge with the USA
  7.  The ways of  solution of  ecological problems

T.: We say “environment”, “environmental problems”, “the protection of the environment”. What does the word “environment” mean? How do you understand it?

P.: The word  environment  means simply what is around us. Some people live in a town environment, for others their environment is the countryside. The air we breathe, the soil on which we stand and walk, the water we drink are all parts of the environment.

T.: What are the most serious  environmental problems?

P.: The most serious environmental problems are:

-  pollution  in its many forms(water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution, etc.);

-  noise from cars, buses, planes, etc.,

-  destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty;

-  shortage  of natural resources;

-  the  growth of population.

T.: What are the sources of pollution?  How are they divided?

P.: The sources of pollution are divided into two groups: natural sources and man – made or anthropogenic sources.

T.: What are the natural sources?

P.: The natural sources are volcano emissions, dust and sand storms, forest fires, floods.

T.: What are the anthropogenic sources?

P.: The anthropogenic sources are industrial enterprises, transport, domestic sources, logging etc.

T.: Why is air pollution the most dangerous among all kinds of pollution?

P.: Human beings can live several weeks without food, a few days without water but only some minutes without air.

T.: What are the main pollutants of the air?

P.: The main pollutants of the air are SO2, NO2, CO, CO2, O3.

T.: Where does carbon dioxide come from?                                                                             P.: People and animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. We produce CO2 when we burn things. Plants, factories and especially cars emit carbon dioxide together with other gases. Trees take  CO2 from the air and produce oxygen. But people cut down the forests and burn big areas. Especially dangerous is burning of the rainforests.

T.: What does air pollution cause?

P.: Air pollution causes acid rains, a damage of the ozone layer, a greenhouse effect, changes in the climate, melting of the glaciers, different diseases.

T.: How does greenhouse effect work?

P.:  Gases in the atmosphere work like a glass in the greenhouse. They let the heat from the sun get in, but don’t let much heat get out. So the atmosphere is becoming warmer. The climate is becoming warmer too.

T.:  What are the problems with the ozone layer?

P.:  Our atmosphere is covered with the ozone layer as a blanket. It protects from the dangerous rays of the sun – the so called ultra-violet radiation. Now there are holes in the ozone layer, one over the South Pole, the second over the North Pole. It is dangerous for people to stay in the direct sunlight. It can cause  a cancer  of skin.

T.:  There is one more negative phenomenon of the air pollution. What is it?

P.: These are acid rains. This happens when gases and chemicals mix with water vapour in the air and the mixture falls back to the earth in the form of rain or snow

One more participant of our discussion is the teacher of  Chemistry …

                                         SO2 + H2O = H2SO3

  ОКСИД            КИСЛОТА

                                 2NO2 + H2O =  HNO3 + HNO2

T.: So you saw practically how gas is emitted into the atmosphere  and how we get acid rain.

And we continue with water pollution.

Why is water very important for life?

P.: Our body consists of   70 per cent of water. Water makes up 83 per cent of our blood.

T.: Almost 80 per cent of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, but can we use it?

P.: No! Ninety-seven per cent of the water on Earth is salt water. Salt water is filled with salt and other minerals. Humans cannot drink this water.                                                     T.: I suggest to remove salt.

P.: It is too difficult  and expensive to remove it.

T.: And what about glacier ice? May be we can take fresh water there.

P.:  Yes and no! Two per cent of the water on Earth is glacier ice at the North and South Poles. This ice is fresh water and could be melted down. But it is too far away from where people live.

T.: How much water is drinkable? How do we use it?

P.: Less than 1 per cent of all  water on Earth is fresh water that we can actually use. People use this small amount of water for drinking, transportation, heating and  cooling, industry and many other  purposes.

T.: What about water resources? Are they polluted?  Give the examples.

P.: Water resources are in danger. Seas, rivers and lakes are used for dumping industrial and nuclear waste. Britain, for example, alone dumps 250 thousand tons of industrial waste straight into the North Sea. The Pacific Ocean has suffered from nuclear pollution because the French Government tested nuclear weapons there. This poisons and kills fish and sea animals.

T.: What are the sources of water pollution?

P.:  The sources of water pollution are:

-  imperfect septic systems;                                                                                                -  soaps and detergents;                                                                                                        -  oil, antifreeze, gasoline;

-  fertilizers and pesticides;                                                                                                 -  pet waste and livestock waste;                                                                                       -  chemicals  from plants  and factories;                                                                              -  litter, sewage and organic  pollutants.

T.: Why are oil spills dangerous?

P.: Oil spills from ships and super-tankers cause pollution. Oil forms a thin layer on top of water and act like a lid on the surface  of water. Animals and plants living in the  water can’t  breathe, oil coats  the feathers of water birds and the fur of  water animals and they die. It’s awfull.

T.: How fertilizers and pesticides pollute water?

P.: Fertilizers and pesticides leak into the water system through the ground water or when it gets washed into the rivers and streams. They cause the excessive growth  of water plants which clog the waterways, use up oxygen in the water and block light to deeper waters.

T.; How people pollute water? ( the seacoast, the banks of the rivers)

P.: When people drop litter such as plastic and cans, food wrappers and cigarette butts, they can be washed by the rain into the rivers and other waterways. Floating plastic is ugly and harmful to the environment. Plastic rubbish is not biodegradable. It can choke animals which try to eat it and drown those  which get tangled in it.

T.: Let’s return from the global problems to the problems of our town. I want to show you a project of the pupils of the 11th grade.  Look at the presentation and say what the most serious problem of our town is.

T.: What problem have you seen?

P.:  It’s littering. We can see litter everywhere.

T.: How long do the different things stay in the ground? How long does it take for them to break down?

P.: A banana peel stays in the ground for 1 to 2 weeks.

An  aluminium can stays there for 80 to 100 years.

Wool socks stay in the ground for 1 to 5 years.

     A plastic bag  -  for 10 to 20 years.

A glass bottle  -  for a million years.

T.: What does  the clean environment in our town depend on?

P.: I think  on inner culture and manners of the people who live here, on bringing up.

T.: What to do? What can you do to help the planet. What are your tips? Let’s plant a tree which helps  to save our planet.

I want to give you  leaves. Write down your tip and put it on the tree.

(Учні записують поради на листочках і прикріплюють на плакаті, де намальовано дерево.)

Зразки порад:

Plant trees!

Feed animals and birds in winter!

Don’t litter in the forest!

Don’t waste water, gas, energy, natural resources!

Keep your towns clean!

Don’t turn the planet into a pile of  rubbish!

Listening and speaking

(Під час уроку через Skype організовано телеміст з Чикаго. Даніель Косса відповів на запитання учнів щодо захисту навколишнього середовища в США.) Можна через Skype організувати телеміст з учнями іншої школи.

Now the TV – bridge with the USA is waiting for us.

T.: Hello! This is school №5.We are glad to see you! Here in the classroom there  are  pupils of the 9th grade.

We have some questions to you.

P1: We would like to talk about the support that the American society provides to protect the environment.

P2: Do the American people understand the importance of the environmental  protection?

P3: Is it safe to swim in the local rivers?

P4: How do the Americans try to solve the problem of car emissions?

P1: How do the Americans use the recycled material?

P2: How is  the pets’ waste controlled?

P3: How do you gather recycle at home?

Thank you very much. It was very interesting to talk to  you! We want our TV-bridges to become a tradition.

T.: What have you learnt from the words of Daniel Cossa?

(Учні розповідають, що вони зрозуміли із розповіді американського вчителя)

6. Підведення підсумків уроку

T.: Let’s return to our quotation. Do you agree with the words in the quotation?

P.: Yes, of course! Everything is done for the sake of money: cutting down the trees, killing the animals e.g. elephants, tigers, bears. The owners or the plants and factories don’t put septic systems because it’s expensive. People think that everything will be enough for their life, they don’t think about future generations.

T.: Let’s summarize everything we have spoken about.

Please attention on the screen!

(Демонструється презентація на мультимедійному обладнанні. Використовується пісня Луі Армстронга  «What a Wonderful  World» та музика Ванеси  Мей)

T.: I thank all the pupils who took part in the discussion. I want to put marks with pleasure to ……..

    7. Домашнє завдання:

Write an article for your school magazine entitled “How Can We Make Our Town a Better  Place to Live in?”

T.: The lesson is over.
