3. Воспитывающий аспект:
- воспитанию активной, целеустремленной, творческой личности, стремящейся к осуществлению поставленных целей и достижению успеха в различных видах деятельности;
- формированию ценностного отношения к миру, толерантности к мнению других людей, опыта социального поведения;
- воспитанию патриотизма, пробудить желание быть полезным своей стране, нравственные чувства: уважение, любовь к людям.

(Students share the most significant events that happened to them with one another)
T--Wonderful! Firstly, in order to be a success today we badly need to find out if we are in the right frame of mind for todays discussion. You see cards with pairs of phrases in front of you. Read them and choose the one that corresponds to your todays mood. If neither of them does, try to express it in your own way.
1. The sky is the limit. 1. Easier said than done.
2. Im ready to give a helping hand. 2. Who will help me?
3. I prefer to stand out in a crowd. 3. Im like others.
4. Its my turn! 4. Why me?
5. I can do it! 5. Id rather not do it.
6. I dare to take a risk! 6. Its too risky!
7. Im a leader! 7. Dont ask me!
8. The more difficult, the more interesting. 8. Its too difficult for me!

12. I wont let you down! 12. Im a failure!
T--Have you made up your mind yet? Will you be so kind as to share your choices with us? (Students answers) Well, I see most of you are quite self-confident, and those who doubt a bit, dont worry, be happy, Im sure our todays talk will blow over all your doubts. Ok? So, keep the phrases with you, well need them soon.
II Famous and Successful
Now, colleagues, look at the screen! Therere some portraits on it. Do you know who all these people are?
P--Im not sure who is next to Marilyn Monroe.
TDoes anyone know?
P- Its Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to set foot on top of Mount Everest.
P--Does anyone happen to know the name of the woman next to Napoleon?
P--I know. Its Gabrielle Chanel, the French fashion designer. She created the little black dress, the perfect red lipstick and the worlds best- selling fragrance Chanel#5.
P--If Im not mistaken its our famous countryman Tadeush Kostushko next to Thomas Edison.
T- Right you are.
- Which of these people in your view could have said the following: At the age of six I wanted to be a cook. At seven I wanted to be Napoleon. And my ambition has been growing steadily ever since?
PIt might be someone wealthy and ambitious. Is it Bill Gates?
TIm afraid, it is not.
T---No, these are not his words.
PI guess the words could have belonged to an eccentric person. Id say, Salvador Dali.
T --Absolutely. Youve guessed! And do you have any idea what the man talking to a little girl does?
P-- He might be a doctor.
P-- A president.
P-- A writer.
P-- Could he be a teacher?
TYes, right. Its a wonderful teacher Shalva Amonashvili who is adored by his little students.
T--Now look again at the phrases youve chosen before and try to apply them to some facts you know about these people.
PMy phrase can be directly applied to Mother Theresa, who dedicated all her life to those who needed her help and support.
PI believe to do something for the first time one needs not to be afraid to set difficult tasks in life. I speak about Yuri Gagarin or people who are inventors like Thomas Edison.
PI think about Michael Jordan. Its not just his basketball skills that have made him popular; its his courage and determination to say I CAN DO IT! in spite of all failures hes experienced in his life.
PDefinitely, Napoleon could have said: Im a leader and achieved practically everything he had dreamed of.
PIt goes without saying such women as Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana stood out in a crowd. Their talents and personalities were unique.
PI like Michael Jacksons songs. They really made a difference in this world.
T (addresses the phrase to the students who werent sure in their success in the lesson)
Could your phrase be applied to any of these people?
PI guess its natural to doubt before you start something unusual. What really matters is to get over it.
TI absolutely agree with all of you. It appears that you and they are similar-minded people. Amazing!
III TDo you think all these people have something in common? OK, Ill reveal my secret: if you guess it right, itll be the topic of our todays discussion.
PWell, all of them are famous.
PThey all made a big breakthrough in various fields.
PThey deserve admiration for their achievements.
PThey realized their talent, fulfilled their potential.
PI think they are all out of the ordinary people.
PThey are rich.
PI cant agree. It seems to be not so important about them.
TDo you have your own version?
PThey all made something outstanding what people greatly appreciate.
P-Probably, they were successful in their lives.
TIts absolutely true. These people probably knew or know the secrets of success. Lets formulate the topic of our discussion.
PSecrets of success.
T---Good. Any other ideas?
P--How to be successful.
TRight you are. How to be successful. Would you like to be successful? Is the topic relevant? Or probably youre too young or too old for it?
PI think success is something we are all keen to have in our lives.
P---Each beautiful thing we see: a vase, a book, a painting or impressive music is somebodys success.
P---People achieve success by various means. So it could be a good chance to figure out the shortest way to it.
IV Setting the objectives of the discussion
T Good. As usual in the beginning we define our objectives. Ladies and gentleman, which aspects of the topic are essential for you? Curl yourselves up in circles of three and come up with your ideas. I need an assistant to put them into a chart:
PWhat is success?
P--What part does luck play in success?
P--How should we measure success?
P--Is there any universal recipe for success?
P--Can money buy success?
P--What to do with success when youre already on the top?
P--Are men and women equally successful in life?
P--Does a family, friends, education make for success?
P--Are there any disadvantages of being successful?
P--Are there any age limitations to success?
P--What should we do if we fail?
A Sketch (while the teacher is busy checking what is written on the board)
PLooking at Ksenia? Wanna go out with her?
PI have no chance.
PCheer up! Do something strange and unusual and she will notice you. For example, stir your ears like me.
P ( looks amazed but then hopelessly waves his hand) ---Waste of time! I can do nothing of the kind.
T--- Guys, what are you talking about?
P---We discuss how to be successful with girls.
TIts easy to find out. Lets ask them. Ksenia, we were wondering what kind of boy you would go out with.
KsI dont like those who show off too much, a boy should be interesting to talk to, kind and generous, I think.
TIm sure, boys, you stand a good chance of success here.
TNow have a look at our chart. It seems to be a good ground for discussion, doesnt it?
V The definition of success
T--I guess the best way to define success is probably to imagine that success is something alive.
-How does it smell? (Sample answers: sweet, like flowers, like honey)
-What is its taste like? (a hamburger, a juicy watermelon, an orange, a big cake, sugary)
-What sounds does it make? (applause, fanfare, jazz, Mozart, an anthem, hurray!, Eureka!)
-What does it look like? (the sky, smiles, awards, a gold medal, horizon, stars, salute, sun, light, the top of a mountain)
-How does it feel? (smooth, warm, pleasant, soft, fluffy)
-Now how would you describe a successful person? (he has some charisma, lots of money, high social status, he is able to provide for his family, respectful, prosperous and good-looking)
TWell, Ill agree, but dont forget the words of William Shakespeare: “All that glitters is not gold.”
TSuccess can be achieved in various spheres of life. One person can be successful in many fields. But its you who make a choice. So which picture would you like to appear in and why?
PI think every girl dreams of a happy, healthy family. If your home is filled with warmth, laughter, childrens voices, if you feel support, love and care and if youre ready to give it in return, youve succeeded in life.
TAlex, and where do you see Paul?
P-- Football, of course
PYes, I see my success in sports as Id like to become a football player in the future, its great to win, score goals, get a gold medal, and what is more why not earn a lot of money for myself and my family?
PI d appear in the picture with a girl in a gown. Without good education one can hardly be successful. Profound knowledge and practical skills are the first step to success.
PI agree with Dana but like my Dad Ill get my way in business. Ive already learned some secrets.
P-- I cant climb a mountain. Nevertheless I have a feeling that Im able to achieve something that nobody expects of me. So Im with those who are on the top of the mountain.
PId rather find a group of like-minded people and well pull ourselves to the top together.
P In my free time I enjoy knitting. I can imagine my success in my hobby. I dream of my own collection of knitted things which I could give my friends as presents.
PNobody has said about love yet. Id put it in the first place in my life. I think deep inside everyone dreams of successful love.
T--Is it possible to be in all pictures at the same time?
PIts hard to say whats in store for me in life but its not bad to try everything. Am I right?
VII TSure, youre right. Now your preferences are clear.
Do you think its a good idea to create our own symbol of success?
And these colourful blocks could be the material we need. What does the symbol of success look like in your minds eye?
TWhich idea do you like most?
TSo, lets build our pyramid of success. Each block suggests that we do a certain task written on it. You decide in which order to put our pyramid up. What shall we start with?(Students come up with their ideas. One student builds a pyramid on a smart board using the function drag & drop)
I TYou were brave enough to pick out the task called A Brain Teaser. Its not an easy one.
Lots of people have been making an attempt to define success. The following three quotations are among the most interesting. But therere some gaps in them. Workings in pairs try to guess the missing words.
1. Theodore Roosevelt said: “The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to ____________.”
(get along with people)
Come up with your ideas, please.
-We think its how to earn money, because it can allow you to live in conditions which can promote success, youll be able to pay for good education, have enough food to be healthy, to provide for your children. Lets be realistic--money is a symbol of ability and achievement.
-We disagree. Money cant buy happiness or love. Our version is how to cope with failure. All people have their ups and downs, the point is not to quit, not to give up.
TThank you, who wants to add?
-You cant achieve success without coming in contact with people. Our answer is how to deal with people.
TYouve guessed it. The correct variant is how to get along with people.
2. Read the next quotation and try to find the two missing words.
“Success doesnt consist of never making _______ but in never making the ________ one a second time.”
---George Bernard Shaw (mistakes, same)
- Definitely the first missing word is mistakes as it goes with the verb to make.
TOK , and what is the second one?
- Maybe its the same. People should learn from their own mistakes to succeed.
TDo other pairs have the same version? Right you are. Mistakes and the same are the missing words.
3. And together with Thomas Alva Edison try to define what a real genius is like: “Genius is 1 per cent _________________ and 99 per cent __________.”
-We offer 1 per cent luck and 99 per cent hard work.
-Our variant is 1 per cent talent and 99 per cent ambitions. A successful person should be ambitious, we think.
-We still support the idea of 99 per cent hard work. Its not enough just to be ambitious.
T: -And 1 per cent ?
-Maybe 1 per cent creativity?
TYou were very close to the truth. Edisons exact words are: 1 per cent inspiration which is close to creativity and 99 per cent perspiration or sweat. I think he meant hard work here.
T Which of these ideas do you support most?
Pair 2:-The third one appeals to us most. Success comes to those who deserve it for the effort theyve put into it.
Pair 6: -We support the idea of the importance of social skills in success.
Pair 4: -We shouldnt be afraid of mistakes in the way to success, they are our helpers, in fact.
2 Thank you. Now, ladies and gentlemen----An Interview
T Who do you think were going to take an interview with today? Only Veronika knows my secret as shes going to be a journalist today. Ksenia Golovataya , one of my best students, I take pride in the fact she was in my class two years ago, now shes a successful student of Minsk State Linguistic University. Meet her.
Veronika:Hi, Ksenia, we know youre too busy with your studies now but still youve agreed to give us this interview online. Thanks a lot.
Ksenia:Hi, Veronika, Natalia Nikolaevna, all guys and guests in the studio. Its a pleasure to be with you.
Veronika:Ksenia, we all think youre a successful person. How would you define success?
Ksenia: I would say success is not a final destination; its a long road consisting of many steps.
Veronika:-I wonder what impressions you have about our school, if years you spent here helped you succeed in life?
Ksenia:-- Years spent in school are of great importance to me. We were having lots of fun and at the same time we managed to improve our records, participated in the Olympiads and different extra-curriculum activities like Debate club. Im still its active member. I think you should make the most of your school years. Our school provided everything possible for us to get on in life. Do you sometimes look at its emblem? Si Sapis, Sis Apis. It can become your personal motto in life.
Veronika:Our audience would like to ask you some questions, if you dont mind.
Ksenia:Ill answer them with pleasure.
P1Ksenia, how important do you consider the knowledge of foreign languages for a successful person is?
K-- I believe most of the audience would agree that nowadays the knowledge of at least one foreign language is the must. And the more you know the better.
P2Are there any disadvantages of success?
Ksenia: Those who have achieved success make mistake when they just rest on their laurels. You should never stop at what has been accomplished. Laziness is the worst enemy of success.
P3Does personal background matter in success?
Ksenia: Definitely. Family and friends provide us with help and support. They encourage us to move on. And teachers take us on a path of discoveries, which leads to success. Personal skills and abilities are of great importance, too.
P4How to put your abilities and talent to the advantage?
Ksenia:--Try to make the most of your abilities and constantly develop them. Only practice makes perfect. It is reasonable to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and to use this knowledge.
Veronika:And the last but not the least:
P5If somebody is shy and not so successful, what would you advise this person to do?
Ksenia:--My advice is never to give up. Ever tried? Ever failed? Try again! Fail better!
Veronika:Thank you, Ksenia for such an interesting interview. We wish you great success in your life! Come to visit us!
Ksenia:KIts my pleasure. See you soon at our gymnasia!
A Sketch: (a student leaves his seat and sits down aside)
T-- Paul, whats the matter with you?
Paul:--You speak about success. And Im a complete failure! Easier said than done. I dont believe its for me.
PDont worry, its hard when youre alone. But were a team. We are all friends.
PDo you know that the most successful people experienced failure many times, take Walt Disney, Albert Einstein, and Thomas Edison for instance.
PKsenia has just advised us not to give up.
PThe wise say in order to succeed you must fail, so that you know what to do next time.
T-- Youre right, guys. All troubles are easy to overcome if your friends support you.
You know, everyone has some obstacles in the way to success. So lets take our next block called An Opinion Poll.
Each of you has a problem that is on the card youll choose.
Put your heads together and while mingling around ask for a piece of advice in your situation and at the same time help your partners cope with theirs. The phrases on the screen will be a hint. Do it while the musics playing.

T-- Do you fancy listening to a MUSICAL FILE now?
If I ask you which musical band can be rightfully called the most significant and successful of the previous century, which one will you name? (PP answer)
-Certainly, its the Beatles. Their songs didnt lose their meaningful message in the passing of time. They still appeal to the audience of all ages.
P- The Beatles are our idols. They inspired us to make our own band. We dont imitate their performing but try to use the best we like about them.
TWow! Then maybe you can tell us the secrets of their success?
PIts easy. They were not just good singers, they were personalities. Their songs were in tune with the feelings of people at the time.
PThey influenced people not only in their music but also in the way they dressed and felt about one another.
T-Would you like to sing some piece of their music right now?
PWed like to perform their most successful song Hey, Jude dedicated to John Lennons son Julian. Its about how to be successful in spite of all troubles in your way.
(Pupils are performing) Thanks a lot. The applause you hear means youve been a great success today.
5And now its time we listened to A Story
--Well tell you about a boy, Richard by name, whos found his formula of success and its likely to be helpful for us as well.
--When Richard was little, he dreamed he was flying. Each night, he was in the air. Early in the morning he would wake up thinking it was true, leap off his bed, expecting to soar out of the window. Of course, he always hit the ground. Then remembering that hed been dreaming and no real person could fly, hed collapse on the floor, crushed by the weight of his own limitations. Eventually, his dreams of flying stopped.
---Once when he was four he got into an accident with a truck which had mangled his left leg, leaving scars that stood out against his skin. Looking at the largest of his scars in the mirror, he suddenly imagined that it was an eagle. It wasnt fair, he thought, he had an eagle on his leg, but he couldnt fly. He could hardly walk, and the crutches hurt his arms.
----Years later, in Venice, sitting on the rooftop of the Cathedral of San Marco, he wasnt sure what life had in store for him. Somewhere in the square, a band was playing Frank Sinatra. It was “Fly Me to the Moon”. Up on the roof of the cathedral, it seemed to him the pieces of his life suddenly fell together. He realized that everyone is born with gifts, but we all run into obstacles. If we recognize our talents and make the best of them, weve got a fighting chance to overcome our obstacles and succeed in life. He knew what his gifts were: imagination and perseverance. His first obstacle was that accident. But he knew obstacles could be overcome. He was proof of that, walking.
SLIDE 22--That night for the first time in years, he dreamed he was flying. He soared through the fields of Italy, through the narrow winding streets of Venice and on beyond the Grand Canal, chasing the reddening sun across the sea.
T--Wonderful story, isnt it? Has it inspired you? What are your special talents that can lead you to success? Share your ideas with us.
P1I think that like the boy I have good imagination, I always dream up, probably I could make up some stories that would be successful, who knows?
P2The story made me remember how once I managed to calm down a little girl, and Mum said I had a talent for it. Doing something for people is also a success.
P3My talent is cooking. I create my own recipes of various dishes, mixing sometimes unusual ingredients. It could become my business in the future or Id have the most successful parties in Minsk.
P4I think I have a good command of English, so why not try learning at least one more language?
P5My sister says Im very patient and I get on with people well. Could it be helpful if I decide to be a good doctor?
TId only dream of such a doctor, ….
P5I believe its just necessary to listen to your heart and everyone can find his/her talents.
VI. Im glad that you understand it, friends. Now lets see what is in store for us now. Our next block deals with a role play.
T--Can a person be successful without his native country and its people? Definitely, he cant.
We are Belarusians and take pride in it. Only if we seek for happiness and success for our motherland, were sure to achieve our goals. Our country badly needs successful young people like you.
Today youll be given a chance to prove your real skills of efficient entrepreneurs and to succeed in negotiations with your prospective foreign partners. Turn over the badges on my table and split into two groups according to the flag of the country you represent. Two badges are marked with the words: A MANAGER.
1) You, guys, run your own business in the sphere of design. You specialize in linen clothes for teenagers. Youd like to expand your business contacts, find a reliable investor and promote Belarusian fashion abroad.
2) And your group represents a world famous Fashion House located in Scotland. Youre ready to invest your money into some foreign company. But youre to make sure they are creative, open to innovations and ready to pilot new projects.
T…, youre a manager. What will signify your success at the negotiations?
PAs a manager Id say we are to make our partners interested in collaboration with our company, and, if possible, to get beneficial investments into our business.
T--Mr. …, what is your idea of success at todays meeting?
PWe seek for promising young stars in fashion, well succeed if their company is really what we need and if they agree to be our partners.
TOK, good luck, you have five minutes. Lets see what youll finally arrive at.
P(group1)Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our company.
S(group2)Good afternoon, thank you for taking the time to meet with us today.
PIts our pleasure. How long have you been in Minsk? Hope youre having a good time here.
SWeve been here for two weeks already. Were excited about your wonderful city.
SIf you dont mind, lets get down to our business.
SLast week we had a chance to attend the Belarusian Fashion Week Festival. It was definitely a great success!
S---We highlighted your line of flax clothes for teenagers. It was incredible.
SYeah, brave colour combinations, a variety of modern styles, national traditions in a costume greatly impressed us. Would you like to consider the possibilities of establishing profitable relationships with our Fashion House?
PWhat is the potential for our business relationship?
S---We could become your investors, our financial support could help you expand your business, modernize your equipment, furthermore you could sell and expose your collections in the best fashion halls of Scotland.
PIts a tempting suggestion.
S If you dont mind wed like to specify some information about your company.
SFirstly, whyve you chosen flax?
P-- Flax is the wealth of Belarus. The flax has been cultivated here for centuries, making it a symbol of Belarus.
P This natural fabric is known for its comfort. It allows the body to breathe; moreover, linen has natural anti-bacterial properties.
PIn addition, linen is a very popular fabric that never goes out of style. With the proper care, it can be a timelessly stylish wardrobe staple.
SWell, its quite convincing. We were informed about your turnover. Theres a run on your collections. What is the secret of your success?
PKeeping in mind traditional Belarusian motives, were piloting the line of clothes with bold ideas following no limitations. Our clothes make your step light and swift, they add individuality and elegance to your image.
P--We help teenagers who wear the clothes we design express their personality, be active, on the top of life, Id say.
P---Not only does the idea of self-confidence attract our young people, I believe the values of our ancestors we promote through the traditions of Belarusian national costume help their self-realization as well.

A Delicate Aspect of Success
T-Friends, I cant but share with you one more problem that doesnt let me have a minutes peace.
-Gore Vidal said: Its not enough to succeed, others must fail.
-The famous Russian poet Boris Pasternak was a laureate of the Noble Prize in literature. He thought its shameful to be on everybodys lips!
- Albert Einstein in 1939 encouraged the US to start building an atomic bomb. Later, when he found out about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he changed his mind. If I had known, I would have become a shoemaker, he admitted.
-What delicate aspect of success is hidden in these words?
PI suppose its the problem of ethics. One shouldnt be selfish, nobody will recognize the success achieved at the cost of peoples sufferings.
P-- It appears that success is relevant. If youre too self-centered, you can go astray and confuse real success with a fake.
PIt proves again its better to work in a team.
P Its good to remember that success is a choice. And people should make it wisely.
PLet us not forget that we should live on this planet according to the laws given by God, the laws of love, mercy and clear conscience.
TThanks a lot. Your words absolutely coincide with my opinion. Im happy to be with such good people as you.

A Game “Hot Ballooning”
T--So, finally weve got our own formula of success. No doubt, all the ingredients are valuable. But arent you curious to know which of the components is the most important?
A game will help us. Its called Hot Ballooning.
These are cards with your ideas about success. After each round of discussion youre supposed to get rid of the four components which you consider less important.
What are you going to get rid of? What is your decision? What is your final choice?
What is left? Absolutely agree with you, my friends. First and foremost we need…LOVE
T-- Lets have a look at our pyramid of success. It helped us to work out our own formula of success. Lets mark the idea we base it on. (A student writes: LOVE)
You know, the problem weve been discussing today is unique as it doesnt have a complete solution. The more you discuss it, the more new ideas you get. Still each of you has made an attempt to find your own idea of success today. And its wonderful!
Paul -Let me say.Our discussion helped me understand that each of us is talented and stands good chances to be successful in life.
TWere so happy to hear that, Paul. It means weve been a success! Congratulations!!!
T--To crown it all up Ive chosen the words of Norman Vincent Peale:
“Throw back your shoulders, let the heart sing, let the eyes flash, let the mind be lifted up, look upward and say to yourself… Nothing is impossible!”
Please keep them in your mind and let success attend you in all your kind undertakings!
And finally as a present for you and for all our guests meet an extremely successful person.
---Hi, everybody. Why am I an extremely successful person?
Are you a rich businessman?
--No, Im not. My bag is full of something even more valuable.
Are you a magician?
--Actually Im not but who knows…
---I see you give up. Ladies and gentlemen, Im an extremely successful person as
Im… (puts on accessories)… a clown.
Im a success when you laugh. I smooth peoples troubles away and make them happier!
