Now it’s time to speak about national symbol of Ireland. Read the text “Why shamrock is the national symbol of Ireland?” and agree or disagree with these statients. If it is wrong - correct, please.

When Patrick was brought before the high king Laoghaireon that May night, he was sentenced to death but showed no fear. He declared, "Christ is the true sun and he will never die. He will give eternal life to those who do his will." Patrick explained that there was only one God but that he was three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Druids couldn't understand this. To illustrate the mystery of the Trinity, Patrick bent down and plucked a sti of shamrock. "Here is one sti but there are three leaves. Likewise, there is one God but three persons stiming from the same divinity." King Laoghaire was impressed. He withdrew the death sentence and gave Patrick permission to preach his gospel throughout Ireland.

  1.  Patrick was afraid of king Leary (his name for short).
  2.  Christ will give eternal life to those who do his will.
  3.  There was only one God and had three persons.
  4.  Patrick plucked a shamrock to illustrate the mystery of the Trinity.
  5.  It happened in March, didn’t it?
  6.  King insisted the death sentence and didn’t give Patrick permission.

За каждый правильный ответ команда получает жетон - трилистник.

Teacher:

Very good. And each country has its own national holiday. Now read the text “The Day of the Saint” and ask different types of questions.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and his feast day is celebrated on 17th March. The day is a national holiday and almost every town in the country has a parade of bands and floats. All kinds of floats take part; some are very elaborate, depicting scenes from history, while others advertise products. Dublin is the venue for the largest of the parades. Each float or 'act' must pass through a preliminary competition before being allowed to take part.

The shamrock, which is a small plant is the national symbol, and 'wetting the shamrock' means having a drink (or two) on Saint Patrick's Day. After the parade is over, there is often a street ceili (pronounced kay-lee), a traditional dance, and the partying continues until late!

The patron saint is still very popular, but the Catholic Church has lost some of its influence in the last few years. The Church has delayed some important reforms, such as divorce, which only became legal in 1997. There have also been a number of scandals that have meant a loss of respect for religion. Even so, 90 per cent of Irish people still say they are Catholics.

Teacher:

Great! Now it’s time to listen to the tape. One pair, Bob and Isobel, is going to spend a week touring the south - west of Ireland by car. They have asked an Irish friend, Helen, to suggest where they should go. Listen to their conversation and follow the route that Helen suggests on the map (see page 32 from Students’ Book).

H = Helen,B = Bob, Is = Isobel.

H: So you're flying to Cork, right?

Is: Yeah, right. We arrive there Monday evening and we already have a hotel booked for Monday night. Then we pick up our hire car on Tuesday morning.

H: Well, Cork itself is worth looking around - there's a nice cathedral there, but personally I wouldn't stay there too long if I were you. I'd head straight for the lakes for the second night - it's a beautiful drive through the mountains, and you can stop at Blarney Castle, and you know, kiss the Blarney Stone.

B: Kiss the Blarney Stone!

H: Yes, it's a tradition, didn't you know? If you kiss the Blarney Stone, you get the Irish gift of eloquence. You know, we're very famous for our eloquence and our ability to talk. So, that's what you have to do.

B: Right, we won't forget. We'll definitely kiss the Blarney Stone!

Is: And can we stay there - at Blarney Castle?

H: Well, there's not really much there. I'd recommend that you go on to Killarney - it's right in the middle of the Lakes, one of the most beautiful areas of Ireland. You could spend two or three nights there easily, just driving round. There's so much beautiful scenery to see - the lakes and the mountains. You'll love it!

Is: Right... Killarney ... that's here ... and do you recommend anywhere special to visit while we're there?

H: Well, you've got to see the Ring of Kerry - it's the most spectacular coastline in the whole of Ireland, I would say. You just drive along the coast road through places like Killorglin - that's lovely - and Dingle Bay, and Kenmare ... there's lots of beautiful spots where you can stop.

Is: So, how long do you think that would take?

H: Oh, you could do it in a day. It's about a hundred miles altogether, I should think.

B: And is there anywhere else to visit while we're in Killarney?

H: There are so many places it's hard to say. You can just drive round and stop wherever you like. You'll find the people terribly friendly in all those little places - and they love Americans, Bob!

B: Sounds great! So where do you think we should head after that, Helen?

H: Well you should see Limerick, for sure - it's something like the fourth biggest city in Ireland, and it's really lovely. It's on the River Shannon, and there's a very nice cathedral. I can't riiber the name ... and King John's Castle ... it's really one of the prettiest cities in Ireland.

Is: So how long do you think we should stay there?

H: I don't know ... one night's probably enough.

B: And from there?

H: Well, if you've got the time you could drive up to Westport - it's about three or four hours' drive, so it's quite a journey, but it's a wonderful drive, and Westport is right by Croagh Patrick, which is one of the most famous mountains in Ireland. Or if you don't want to go that far north, you could drive across to Waterford here on the south coast.

B: Isn't that the place where they make the glass?

H: That's right, that's right - they make some of the best crystal in the world - Waterford crystal. You can visit the factory there. It's quite interesting!

Is: And is it a pretty place?

H: Yes, it's quite nice. You could stay there overnight, and then it's the most wonderful drive back from Waterford to Cork, along the coast road ... and that takes you back to where you started.

B: Great! Thank you very much for your help.

Is: Yes, that's fantastic, Helen! Thanks.

H: You're welcome. I hope you have a great trip!

Каждая команда записывает маршрут путешествия.

Teacher:

Now listen to their conversation again and then answer the following questions:

  1.  Where are Bob and Isobel going to start and finish their trip?
  2.  How many nights does Helen recommend that they stay in each place?

Teacher:

Super! Now sum up your knowledge about Ireland. Do the quiz.

Answers: 1b 2a 3b 4c 5c 6b 7b 8a 9b 10c 11abc 12c

Teacher:

It’s time to make up a conclusion. So, today we have learnt some facts about language, history, culture, scenery, famous people of Ireland. Count your shamrocks, and the winner is the team which has the most points.
