Types of morphemes.

Word Formation is that branch of lexicology that studies the derivative structure of existing words and the patterns on which a language builds new words. It is one of the main ways of enriching the vocabulary. When a word first comes into existence is built out according to the existing patterns of the elements available in the language. Words have a composite nature and made up of smaller units, each possessing sound form and meaning. Thus, words can be divided into smaller units which a referred to as morphemes. Morphemes are the smallest indivisible two-faced language units. They are not independent as words or sentences are . They are always used as parts of words. Like a word a morpheme is a two-faced language unit, unlike a word a morpheme is not an autonomous unit, and can occur in speech only as a constituent part of the word. It is the minimum meaningful language unit. There are different types of morphemes in English. Semantically morphemes fall into root and affixiational morphemes . The root is the morpheme that expresses the lexical meaning of the words, e g teach – teacher – teaching “t-e-a-c-h” - is the root morpheme.Affixes are morphemes that modify the meaning of the root. The affix that comes before the root is called prefix, e g reread. The affix that comes after root is called suffix, e g division. One should distinguish between suffixes and inflections in English. Suffixes can form a new part of speech, e g beauty (noun) – beautiful (adj). Inflections are morphemes used to change grammar forms/ grammatical meaning of the word. E g work – works – worked –working. Structurally morphemes fall into free and bound morphemes. A free morpheme coincides with the stem. A bound morpheme occurs only as a constituent part of a word. Affixes are bound morphemes , for they always make part of a word. Root morphemes are usually free morphemes. Worker – work – root, free er – not-root affixitional suffix, bound
