ІІ Основна частина уроку

2.1. Reading (Читання)

2.1.2. Pre – reading activity

T. There is no “right” age to begin dating. Dating may begin as young as 13-14 years old, but becomes common around 16-18.

Read the information about English – speaking countries youth’s attitude to love, dating and things connected with it.

2.1.3. Studying the table

In America, Britain and Canada

In Ukraine

Young people often start meeting someone of the opposite sex around the age of 14. They do not need an older person to go with them. Teenagers generally date people of their own age, although girls sometimes date boys two or three years older than they are

How old are young people when they start dating?

Either a girl or a boy can invite someone on a date. It does not mean that they date regularly only one person. They may go out with one person one week and someone else the next one. Most teenagers go on dates with more than one person. Young people may even date several friends at the same time. Sometimes two couples go together

How old are young people when they start dating?

Who do young people usually date?

Parents very rarely choose dates for their children. Young people usually meet and choose their own dates. Sometimes, however, someone arranges a date for two people who do not know each other

How do teenagers choose their dates?

Boys and girls go to parties together. They go on dates to the cinema, dances, roller skating, etc. A boy often goes to pick up his date at her home. Girls may invite boys to parties or other social events. Hand holding and light kissing in public are common. Anything more than light kissing is not generally approved of in public

Where do young people go on dates?

Dating is often very expensive. Today, even the simplest date can cost over $20.00. A couple on a date may go to the movies and have a snack afterwards. Movies now cost $3.00 — $5.00 per person, and a snack can easily cost more than $10.00. The boy and girl often share expenses. Sometimes, however, one person pays for both people

How much does it cost to go on a date? Who is supposed to pay for entertainment when dating?

2.1.4. Discussing and comparing (Обговорення та порівняння)

T. What is similar and what is different in the dating customs of the English-speaking countries and your country? (Reading specific information / extracting cultural information / making comparison).

2.2. Listening (Слухання)

 2.2.1. Pre – listening activity

T. Listen to five people talking about their experiences of speed dating. Match the sentences (a-e) with the speakers (1-5)

 2.2.2. Listening

Speaker 1   I had quite a good time when I tried speed dating. It wasn't a bad way to spend the evening, but certain things weren't very satisfying. One problem is that you have to spend exactly three minutes talking to each person. But time passed so quickly when I was speaking with the most interesting people and really slowly with people I didn't like so much. I wanted to spend more than three minutes with the people I liked - and less time with the boring people. That was a bit frustrating.

Speaker 2   I really enjoyed it when I went speed dating. I think it's a great way to meet people, and it's so easy to start talking. It isn't like going up to somebody in a bar or club and trying to chat them up - that can be really stressful, because they might not want to talk. Everybody at a speed date is there to meet somebody, so everybody wants to talk. It's a great atmosphere.

Speaker 3   1 went speed dating for the first time last weekend. My friends had told me about it, and they said it was brilliant. I didn't think it was that great, but it was OK. It's a good way to meet people, I suppose. I'm not sure I'd do it again, though.

Speaker 4   I've only been speed dating once in my life - never again! It was a terrible experience - so embarrassing. I can't think of anything less enjoyable, in fact! You're in a room with lots of other people who are all single, all looking for a partner. It's just really uncomfortable. 1 much prefer clubs and bars, places like that. People go to have a good time, not just to meet somebody. It's more relaxed.

Speaker 5   I thought it was a good way to meet somebody, so I tried it. I enjoyed the experience, I suppose - once I'd relaxed. It felt a bit strange at first, a bit like doing 25 job interviews in one day. I found it difficult to talk to people - I didn't know what to talk about. But after a while it got easier and I was able to chat more confidently. By the end, I thought it was a nice way to spend the evening. The main problem was that I didn't meet anybody! I made a list, but the people on my list weren't exactly perfect - they just didn't have as many bad points as some of the others!

 2.2.3. Comprehension  (Розуміння)

____ a   It was difficult at first but later І could chat more easily.

____ b   It's the least enjoyable experience I've ever had.

____ с   It was less enjoyable than I expected.

____ d  Time passed most quickly when I was talking to people I liked.

_____e  It was less stressful than chatting somebody up in a bar.

2.3. Speaking about love on basis of a poem

T. All these lines are taken from a poem by Helena from Staffordshire in the Just 17 magazine. In her poem she expresses her ideas about love.

1. Which of them do you agree or disagree with? And which of the statements do you doubt? (Evaluating the author's point of view) (*розвиток критичного мислення)

LOVE keeps you lively

When others are down.

LOVE makes you day-dream

Make things seem alright.

LOVE keeps you warm

On a cold winter's night.

LOVE makes you happy

And goes to your head.

LOVE never ends.

LOVE seems for ever.

LOVE keeps you smiling

No trace of a frown.

LOVE is a wonderful

Thing though it's sad

2. Can you put the lines into a poem? Read your poem aloud

3.    Here is the end of the poem. Can you guess the last sentence? (Predicting)

Until those dreaded words Let's still be friends.

4.    Now listen to the original poem. Do you have the same variant?

LOVE is a wonderful thing though it's sad.

LOVE makes you happy and goes to your head.

LOVE keeps you lively when others are down.

LOVE keeps you smiling, no trace of a frown.

LOVE keeps you warm on a cold winter's night.

LOVE makes you day-dream, makes things seem alright.
