  1.  Let’s talk about Great Britain. What do you know about this country?

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. It occupies the territory of some 244.000 square kilometers. It’s washed by the North Sea in the east, the Atlantic Ocean in the north-west. There’s the Irish Sea between two large islands – Great Britain and Ireland. It’s separated from the European continent by the English Channel. Its narrowest part is called the Strait of Dover.

Britain’s population is about 58 mln. The UK consists of 4 countries – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK’s flag – the Union Jack – is red, white and blue and it’s made up of 3 crosses.

The UK is a constitutional monarchy: the Head of the State is a king or a queen. In practice the Sovereign reigns but doesn’t rule, the UK is governed by the Government – a body of Ministers who are the leading members of the political party in power and who are responsible to Parliament.

The territory of Great Britain is small, yet the country has a wide variety of scenery.
England is a heart of Britain. It’s the richest, the most fertile and most populated. The north and west of England are mountainous but all the rest of the territory is a vast plain. The emblem is a red rose.

Wales is the smallest part of the UK. There are picturesque mountains in the north and the mining and industrial areas in the south. Most people in Wales live in the coastal plains. The capital is Cardiff, the emblem – a leek or daffodil.

Scotland is a land of mountains. They are called the Highlands. The lakes in Scotland are called “lochs”. The largest is Loch Lomond. The capital is Edinburgh, the greatest industrial centre is Glasgow. The emblem is a thistle.

The territory of Northern Ireland is small. It’s the land of lakes, rivers, and a varied sea coast. Some places are known for their wild beauty. The emblem is a shamrock.

The capital of Great Britain is London. It stands on the river Thames. The longest river is the Severn. The climate is mild.

  1.  What part of Great Britain would you like to visit? Why?

    There are different places to see and visit in Britain, which history is full of events and a lot of sights are connected with them or famous people who glorified their country.
    As for me, I’d like to visit the Lake District where you can experience the moods of nature. Here tourists are enchanted by the relaxed waters of the Windermere. A lot of famous people chose this place to live in. Among them is William Wordsworth – a famous English poet who lived there in Dove Cottage. Then we can travel to Hill Top – a favourite place of the world famous English writer Beatrix Potter. Her books with charming illustrations made by herself are adored by the children all over the world. Her tales about Tom-Kitten, Peter the Rabbit are so nice and amazing. I’d like to see her cottage in Top Hill.
    Another place I’d like to go to is York – to experience the idea of adventure and history. It was started by the Romans and the Vikings. I’d like to visit the world famous York Cathedral and the Museum of the Vikings. Why not to visit Stratford-upon-Avon – the birthplace of William Shakespeare or sisters’ Bronte Parsonage Museum in Haworth. There are lots of places to see and to visit.
  2.  What would you like to ask a British teenager about Britain?

    1) I want to know what part of Britain you live in;
    2) I wonder if there are a lot of sights there;
    3) It’s interesting to know how you spend your free time there.
  3.  Give me a piece of advice on what sights to see in London.

    First of all I’d like to say that London is the place where the modern rubs shoulders with the old. It’s one of the world’s most enjoyable cities. There’s always something new to be discovered. The most traditional tourists’ attractions are: the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London.
    The Palace of Westminster, known today as the Houses of Parliament, is situated on the bank of the river Thames. The Clock Tower is called “Big Ben”.
    Westminster Abbey is a national shrine. Here kings and queens are crowned and famous people are buried. One of the treasures of the Abbey is the oaken Coronation chair made in 1300.
    St Paul’s Cathedral is the largest Protestant Church. It’s an architectural masterpiece. Trafalgar Square is the natural centre of London. Here tourists can see Nelson’s Column and visit the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery and enjoy masterpieces of art.
    The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror. It used to be a fortress, a prison, a zoo, a royal palace; now it’s a museum with a lot of attractions.
  4.  They say it’s important for a person to speak English as it’s popular all over the world. What’s your opinion?
